Large homes and museums bring a new life to the Old Santa Fe Trail
Hugged by Historic Eastside to the north and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains to the east, the Old Santa Fe Trail area’s young estate properties sit on quiet streets teeming with history. “The Old Santa Fe Trail used to be where wagon riders would come through into Santa Fe, and it runs all the way to Missouri,” says Lise Knouse, a Broker Owner with Keller Williams Realty who has nearly 20 years’ experience selling homes in Santa Fe. The Old Santa Fe Trail still runs through this affluent suburb, which overlooks downtown less than a mile north. “That’s the thing about Old Santa Fe Trail — you’re so close to town, but you still get large lots and the elevation to look at the city lights,” says Paige Cochran, an Associate Broker with Keller Williams Realty and Santa Fe local. Tucked behind piñon and juniper woodlands in Old Santa Fe Trail’s southeast corner, the Museum Hill area is also home to four museums and the Santa Fe Botanical Garden, which bring visitors through the area.

Sprawling Santa Fe-style estates
Sidewalk-free streets and dirt alleyways branch off the Old Santa Fe Trail, which gently slopes as it approaches the Sangre de Cristo Mountains' foothills to the east. Sprawling Santa Fe-style homes from the 1990s to early 2000s dominate the area, featuring tan stucco and red clay exteriors, flat roofs with parapets, and colorful doors, window frames and garages. Those lining the neighborhood’s northeastern edge are tucked behind tall piñon trees, adobe fences and manicured lawns; those further south sit on acreage with detailed natural gardens, cobblestone paths and juniper trees. Prices range from $950,000 for four-bedroom homes with half-acre lots closer to the city to $6,000,000 for five-bedroom mansions further south with 4 or more acres.

Gardens, fruit orchards and tree-shaded trails
Beside the museums on Museum Hill, the Santa Fe Botanical Garden features gravel trails that travel through juniper-piñon woodlands and a small art garden dotted with sculptures. Cherry and pear trees shade the sweet-smelling fruit orchard, and the red Kearny’s Gap Bridge Set crosses the Arroyo De Los Pinos. Amelia White Park stretches nearly three acres along Old Santa Fe Trail. “This used to be where wagons and donkeys would station while traveling through Santa Fe in the 1800s,” Cochran says. Colorful rose bushes bloom in the park’s central plaza, which the Santa Fe Garden Club revitalized in 2023. Ivy-covered arcades branch out from this central garden, and a tree-shaded path wraps around the park’s perimeter.
There's no better place to experience the high desert climate than at the Botanical Gardens.
