Quiet suburban living near the Santa Fe County Fairgrounds and Plaza

Just 4 miles from Downtown Santa Fe, Pueblos de Rodeo Road is bordered to the north by the Santa Fe County Fairgrounds and is known for its area-affordability and quiet, suburban vibe. “It’s located near restaurants and businesses, but they’re not next door, so you get to keep your neighborhood calm and safe,” says Michael Kaplan, a Director of the Pueblos de Santa Fe Owners Association and resident of over 10 years. Undeveloped open spaces on the neighborhood’s northern edge form a barrier between the busy Rodeo Road and the sleepy suburb. Other than the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Sagebrush Church and highly rated Piñon Elementary, homes and mature trees are the only things to dot the community’s peaceful streets. “Our covenants are strict about setting up things like Airbnbs or businesses because we only want it to be owners and renters here,” explains Kaplan. “We like that it’s purely residential.”

Secluded Santa Fe homes and townhouses

Set on lots ranging from a tenth to a quarter of an acre, single-family homes here are surrounded by manicured desert landscaping, secluded from the neighborhood’s quiet streets behind sagebrush and mature fruit trees. All were built in the Santa Fe style in the late 1970s and early ‘80s; common features include flat parapeted roofs, colorful wood molding and earth-toned stucco exteriors. These homes come in three- and four-bedroom layouts and range from $440,000 to $670,000, with lot size and bedroom count shaping price.

Attached Santa Fe-style townhouses from the 1970s and ‘80s are also available, their rambling layouts giving them the appearance of a pueblo of adobe homes. Shaded by cottonwood trees and piñon pines, these townhouses feature two- and three-bedroom layouts and range from $360,000 to $490,000.

Pueblos de Rodeo Road has an HOA that provides common area maintenance. As of 2024, HOA dues come at a flat monthly rate of $42.75, significantly less expensive than other HOA dues across Santa Fe.

Nearby Interstate 25 and Saint Francis Drive

The namesake Rodeo Road runs along the community’s northern edge, leading 2 miles east to Interstate 25 and the Saint Francis Drive thoroughfare; Saint Francis Drive travels 4 miles north directly into Downtown Santa Fe. Santa Fe Trails buses make stops along Rodeo Road, but Kaplan advises that residents need a car to get around the city. The CHRISTUS Saint Vincent Regional Medical Center is around 4 miles east, and the Santa Fe Regional Airport is 6 miles west.

Untouched greenspaces and the Genoveva Chavez Community Center

A short stretch of juniper-piñon woodlands forms the neighborhood’s northern border, and other than a handful of dirt trails that locals use to walk their dogs, the greenspace remains untouched. “We’ve had several people offer to buy the common area to build houses, but we always immediately say no,” Kaplan explains. “Developing there is against the rules of our covenant, and we just don’t want to bring a bunch of noise and construction into our neighborhood.”

The 177,000-square-foot Genoveva Chavez Community Center also sits immediately north of the neighborhood and is the city’s largest recreation complex. While its Olympic-sized lap pool is often used for swim meets, the recreational pool beside it features a waterslide and jacuzzi areas. Those looking to break a sweat can also find a weight room with cardio equipment, racquetball and basketball courts, and an ice rink that’s open year-round. The Genoveva Chavez Park sits outside the community center, its 3-acre field studded with play structures and pavilions.

Rodeo de Santa Fe

The Rodeo de Santa Fe has come to the fairgrounds just north of the neighborhood every year since 1949, bringing with it hundreds of cowboys and cowgirls to compete in bull-riding, clownery and more. “These cowboys are some world-class athletes who come into town with their trucks and horses, leading this romanticized life where one wrong move on a bull means they’re dead,” explains Chris Webster, a longtime Santa Fe local and CEO of Webster Enterprises. While experienced competitors participate in the more dangerous activities like bull riding, younger attendees can enjoy the Mutton Bustin’ event, where they ride on the back of a sheep for as long as possible. Although the rodeo attracts thousands of attendees, Kaplan says this rarely impacts the neighborhood. “They always have adequate parking, so no one’s ever parking here. You might be able to hear the rodeo, but it’s not a bad thing getting to listen to the music they play and the announcements about the games.”

Nearby shopping along Cerrillos Road and Downtown Santa Fe

Although being outside downtown’s commercial traffic is a neighborhood selling point, the namesake Rodeo Road leads a mile west to the Cerrillos Road commercial corridor. The Santa Fe Place Mall is home to over 80 retailers and restaurants, including standard mall fare like JCPenney and Outback Steakhouse, regional chains like the Boot Barn, and locally owned businesses like Señor Murphy Candymaker. Across the street from the mall, the Plaza Santa Fe (not to be confused with the Santa Fe Plaza) is home to numerous grocery stores, including Target, Albertson’s and Sam’s Club. Downtown Santa Fe is also 4 miles north, which Kaplan says is always an easy, 15-minute drive at most. Known for its eateries and retailers, the downtown area invites visitors to peruse the polished rocks and gemstones of the Meteorite, Mineral and Fossil Gallery before grabbing Christmas-style enchiladas at Cafe Pasqual’s.
