A luxury mountain suburb between the Santa Fe Plaza and National Forest
In the Sangre de Cristo foothills, Sierra del Norte is an upscale suburb set 3 miles between Hyde Memorial State Park and the Santa Fe Plaza. One of the City Different’s newest neighborhoods, Sierra del Norte began development in the 1990s, its sprawling estates taking advantage of the area’s juniper-piñon woodlands and panoramic mountain and city views. “It’s one of the few places where you can see all the mountain ranges surrounding Santa Fe, from the Jemez to the Ortiz,” says Paige Cochran, a local Associate Broker with Keller Williams Realty. On top of its views, Sierra del Norte enjoys proximity to the City Different’s expansive forests and parks while remaining close to its artistic and culinary offerings. “It’s very close to the Santa Fe Opera but also Hyde Park, so you’re getting luxury with nature,” Cochran says.

Custom-built Santa Fe-style homes with manicured lawns and mountain views
Secluded from the street behind piñon pines and winterfat bushes, Sierra del Norte’s sprawling estates were custom-built in the Santa Fe style between the 1990s and 2000s. All sit on 1- to 2-acre lots with manicured lawns and stone patios; common features include flat roofs, tan stucco exteriors and sleek, modern designs that set them apart from homes in other luxury Santa Fe neighborhoods. Most have three to four bedrooms and range from $1.6 million to $2.5 million, depending on lot size and their sense of seclusion; however, hilltop mansions with views of Santa Fe and the surrounding mountain hillsides can cost between $4.4 million and $4.5 million. “Most of Sierra del Norte is built out, but some straggling lots are still available. The best thing is that it’s a lot easier to develop here than in other mountain communities because the land is a lot flatter,” Cochran says. Prices for lots range from $150,000 for 1 acre at a lower elevation to $800,000 for 2 acres overlooking the Sangre de Cristos’ juniper-piñon woodlands.

Trails, forests and campsites all around
The Sierra del Norte Trailhead is the most popular spot along the Dale Ball Trail Network for its access to flatter terrain, earning it the nickname “The Corral.” The Dale Ball Trails stretch nearly 25 miles across the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and are open to dog walkers and cyclists. “They’re so long that they run all the way to the Santa Fe Canyon and even toward Atalaya Mountain,” Cochran says. Around 3 miles further east in the mountains, the 350-acre Hyde Memorial State Park is surrounded by ponderosa pines and gold-leafed aspens, and offers over 50 campsites for tents and RVs. Hyde Park is also home to over 4 miles of trails. The quarter-mile Waterfall Trail leads to scenic creeks and waterfalls, and the challenging West Circle Trail climbs over 1,000 feet in less than 3 miles.

Downtown Santa Fe and Ten Thousand Waves
Sierra del Norte residents are only 3 miles west of Downtown Santa Fe’s shopping and dining scene. Tia Sophia’s here offers a low-key dining experience paired with some of the city’s most beloved green chile sopapillas. “Tia Sophia’s is where you go for the real New Mexican food,” says Emily Medvec, a local Associate Broker with EXP Realty. The DeVargas Center in downtown is home to several grocery stores, including Market Street and Sprouts Farmers Market. A mile up Hyde Park Road in the opposite direction, the Ten Thousand Waves Spa is surrounded by tall piñon pines and is home to hot springs, saunas and the Izanami Restaurant. “Ten Thousand Wave and Izanami are the very best resort and restaurant in Santa Fe, in my humble opinion,” Cochran says. Housing the largest selection of soba in the world outside Japan, Izanami mixes a fine-dining Japanese tapas experience with a casual, welcoming atmosphere.
