A friendly, prestigious community on the edge of Downtown Santa Fe
Though Vista Encantada is just over a mile north of the Santa Fe Plaza, this upscale community's sprawling estates, dense juniper-piñon woodlands and views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains make it feel secluded from the City Different's lively downtown. "Vista Encantada offers the perfect blend of traditional Santa Fe style, natural beauty, and cultural richness. Its prime location, spacious lots, and welcoming community make it an ideal place to live for those seeking a serene yet vibrant lifestyle in the heart of Santa Fe," says Emily Medvec, an Associate Broker with EXP Realty Santa Fe and former president of the Vista Encantada Neighborhood Association. "The informal neighborhood association fosters a friendly, welcoming atmosphere without imposing HOA dues," Medvec says. Despite its prestige and sprawling estates, Vista Encantada still boasts a neighborly sensibility. "The lots are large enough for privacy, but your neighbors are always close enough if you need to run over to borrow a cup of sugar," says Ashley Margetson, a Luxury Real Estate Broker with Sotheby's International Realty who was formerly the Vista Encantada Neighborhood Association's president for 19 years.

Secluded Santa Fe-style and Territorial Revival estates
Despite being so close to downtown, Vista Encantada is filled with dirt roads, scenic arroyos and secluded estates that overlook the city. "You're getting at least an acre here, and even though this is the high desert, there's mature juniper trees and shrubbery everywhere that lends the area a sense of privacy," Margetson says. Santa Fe-style mansions from the 1950s to '70s are common here, and according to Medvec, their stucco exteriors, flat roofs and rambling floorplans capture the city's unique architectural style. "Vista Encantada is renowned for its quintessential Santa Fe architecture, often featuring rustic beams and cozy kiva fireplaces. Many properties have guest houses and studio additions, so there's ample space for visitors or creative pursuits," Medvec says. Santa Fe-style homes range from $940,000 for three bedrooms on an acre to $4.6 million for five bedrooms on nearly 3 acres. A handful of Territorial Revival homes from the 1950s to '70s can also be found here, featuring bright stucco exteriors, brick cornices and white wooden columns; prices start at $975,000 for four-bedroom homes on nearly 2 acres to $6.2 million for five-bedroom mansions on over 3 acres.

The Arroyo Barranco runs around 2 miles through the center of the neighborhood, gently descending until it reaches the 30-acre Fort Marcy Park in North Hills. Six tennis courts, a dog park, a playground and a tree-shaded field surround the Fort Marcy Recreation Complex here, which is home to a 25-yard pool and weightroom; the Fort Marcy Ballfield here is also home to the Santa Fe Fuego of the professional Pecos League. Less than 3 miles west, La Tierra Network is home to over 25 miles of dirt paths that climb over desert hills. Hikers can enjoy the scenic 2-mile Ridge Loop, while mountain bikers can find dirt ramps and obstacles in the technical trail that locals call "The Trashpit."

The Santa Fe Plaza and DeVargas Center
Although Vista Encantada lacks its own shopping and dining scene, the Santa Fe Plaza is less than a mile south. "There's so much shopping, dining and music in the Plaza — it's all right there," Margetson says. Set in a turquoise 17th-century hacienda, the Shed is often busy with tourists and locals and offers New Mexican classics like green chile burritos; at the cantina-like bar, diners can also enjoy specialty cocktails like the tamarind-flavored ZoZoRita, named for the Zozobra event near Vista Encantada. La Boca is run by the eight-time James Beard nominee James Campbell Caruso and pairs Mediterranean cuisine with wines imported directly from Spain. The DeVargas Center shopping mall is also less than a mile south and lies outside the tourist traffic of the Plaza. "They've got the Sprouts Farmers Market and Market Street there for groceries; it's really meant for real-life shopping," Margetson says.

Scenic drives and highway 84 access
Highway 84 and the scenic Bishops Lodge Road form Vista Encantada's western and eastern borders, connecting locals directly to Downtown Santa Fe. "It's so convenient — you're only 3 minutes from the Plaza, and you can get to the southside of the city super quickly," Margetson says. The neighborhood's dirt roads require drivers to travel slowly and often powder cars with a layer of dust. The Santa Fe Regional Airport is under 12 miles west, and the CHRISTUS Saint Vincent Regional Hospital is around 4 miles south.

The Burning of Zozobra
With the Santa Fe Plaza so close by, Vista Encantada is near all of the city's largest events. "Whether you're savoring the flavors of local cuisine or immersing yourself in the rich tapestry of Santa Fe's cultural festivals — such as the Folk Art Market, Indian Market, Spanish Market, and the Wine and Chili Festival — there's always something to look forward to," Medvec says. Created by local artist William Howard Shuster, Jr., in 1924, the Burning of Zozobra is held every Labor Day Weekend at Fort Marcy Park, right by the edge of Vista Encantada. "Zozobra is a gigantic puppet some fifteen stories high made of wood and cloth. Every year near the end of summer, we set him on fire, and he creaks and groans and whines and cries, letting go of all the sadness and bad experiences of the previous year," Margetson says.
