Resort-style living in Sarasota’s western suburbs
The Meadows is a resort-style neighborhood in Sarasota’s western suburbs, conveniently located minutes from Interstate 75 and The Mall at University Town Center. “It’s a golf course neighborhood, but you don’t have to join the club to live here,” says resident Laura Way, a Realtor with RE/MAX Alliance Group. “Either way, you get the beauty of living by a course with mature landscaping.” The Meadows Country Club has several membership options, including the resident-exclusive Renaissance Access Plan, which provides entry to most club amenities, with some limitations.
Property prices range from $150,000 to over $1 million
The neighborhood was initially developed in the 1970s, and most of its properties were built before the turn of the 21st century. Architecturally, it features a contemporary blend of Spanish eclectic and New Traditional homes. “We have everything from one-bedroom condos to million-dollar homes,” Way says. Prices start with the multifamily units – condos and villas – ranging from around $150,000 to roughly $600,000, depending on square footage and location. Units with waterfront or golf course views cost more. Single-family properties generally range from around $450,000 to just under $800,000; however, sections like Windsor Park have larger lots or newer homes valued from the low $800,000s to $1.2 million. Although most properties are outside special flood zones, these zones are subject to change, and flood insurance could be required for federally backed mortgages. Hurricane season runs from early June to late November.
The Meadows offers extensive green space and outdoor activities
Designed around nature and active living, The Meadows has more than 1,500 acres of green space, including 14 miles of trails and almost 25 miles of shoreline across 85 lakes. Local anglers can fish on Butterfly Lake, right off the nature trail, and some residents can even fish from their backyard. Of course, the main recreational hub is The Meadows Country Club, featuring various membership options. When fully operational, the club offers three championship courses, a fitness center, indoor and outdoor dining, an Olympic-sized pool and a spa. Certain facilities, including the restaurants and golf courses are currently closed until further notice. Nathan Benderson Park is another choice for getting outdoors. The 550-acre park surrounds a massive lake with paved trails and is famous for its world-class rowing events and facilities. The beach isn’t far either. “Siesta Key is the beach that gets all of the attention, but locals go to Lido,” Way says. Lido Beach, popular for kayaking, is about 11 miles away.
Shopping options range from Saks Fifth Avenue to Old Navy
Honore Avenue is the neighborhood’s main road and a good way to avoid traffic on the way to The Mall at UTC, which has over 150 stores and restaurants. Shopping options range from Saks Fifth Avenue to Old Navy, and the restaurants offer visitors a variety of cuisines, like the rotating New American menu at Seasons 52 or the popular Mexican fare at Rocco’s Tacos and Tequila Bar. UTC also has ample everyday conveniences like doctor’s offices and big-box stores, including Target, BJ’s Wholesale Club and The Home Depot. Sarasota County operates bus routes around UTC.
Award-winning Visual and Performing Arts program at Booker High
Sarasota County Schools, graded A on Niche, serves The Meadows. Most of the neighborhood is zoned for Gocio Elementary, which receives a B, but a small section on the north side is zoned for Emma E. Booker Elementary, graded B-minus. Booker Middle earns a B, and Booker High, with an A-minus, is ranked as Florida’s tenth best high school for the arts. Its magnet, pre-professional visual and performing arts program has an award-winning history going back some 40-plus years. Students put on productions weekly, from "Romeo & Juliet" to "Beetlejuice."
Direct routes to Downtown Sarasota and Sarasota Bradenton International Airport
Way says the neighborhood has three entrances, and the main one is on 17th Street – a straight shot to Downtown Sarasota, less than 10 miles west. University Parkway is a direct route to Sarasota Bradenton International Airport, about 10 miles away. It also connects to I-75 less than 5 miles away, as does Fruitville Road on the neighborhood’s south side. Lakewood Ranch Medical Center is the closest hospital, just over 5 miles away.
