Close to the Santa Cruz Mountains
Public green space in Quito itself is limited, apart from some limited-access athletic facilities and playgrounds at Marshall Lane Elementary, and the West Valley College campus just west of the neighborhood. However, Quito is less than 2 miles north by car from El Sereno Open Space Preserve trailheads, which offer access to a network of dozens of miles of mixed-use trails popular with hikers and mountain bikers. An El Sereno is just the start of a series of Santa Cruz Mountains parks and preserves that cover hundreds of thousands of acres to the south and west of the neighborhood. Outdoor enthusiasts have nearly endless options, and after a hard day’s hike, they can relax with a local vintage at one of the many wineries that pepper the mountains.

On the plus side, both of these areas offer top-notch dining options and sizeable retail offerings. Both areas are also known for being walkable and vibrant, sort of an upscale twist on a traditional small town downtown. “They’re honestly just nice places to walk around,” says Sedgwick. “Both towns have done a great job of creating retail areas that are enjoyable to be in. And, of course, the restaurants are fantastic.”
