Waterfront living and walkability in Hitch Village-Fred Wessels
The soul of Savannah is in the river, and people living in this neighborhood have a front-row seat. Hitch Village-Fred Wessels, also locally known as the Eastern Wharf, is a sprawling community of million-dollar condominiums at the terminus of downtown Savannah's busy East Bay Street. Towering brick buildings overlook the shimmering waterfront and an expansive outdoor courtyard where homeowners can lounge outdoors and walk their dogs. Locals travel on foot in this convenient seaport town, with the city's most popular destinations at arm's reach.
Converted warehouse condominiums overlooking the Savannah River
Hitch Village-Fred Wessels buyers can explore converted warehouses with upscale finishes and move-in-ready new builds, all at luxury prices. The neighborhood is relatively new, dating back four or five years, and sale prices range from $800,000 to $4 million, with the majority selling around $1 million. “They’re built in the style of the 200-year-old townhomes and row homes that line River Street,” says Joel Solomon, Realtor at Century 21 Solomon properties and Savannah local. Residences at the lower end of the market are smaller in size but find new owners more quickly than higher-priced properties. As more buyers make Hitch Village-Fred Wessels home, inventory is more limited, and there isn't always an abundance of listings, which can drive a competitive market. “When they decided to build this, the city gave them the okay to make the community STVR– its attractive because you don’t have to wait for approval like the rest of the historic Savannah zip code. Properties move a lor faster here," Solomon says”
Shops, restaurants and office space on the first floor
This mixed-use condominium community has a handful of dining and retail options on the ground level. “Once the community center is built, it will come with amenities, like free breakfast and happy hour cocktails, covered under the HOA,” Soloman says. For now, locals can head to Honeysuckle Gelato for a sweet treat or stop for a quick slice at Squirrel's Pizza. The Pirates' House, one of Savannah's most famous restaurants, is also nearby in a historic building dating way back to 1753. The inn turned jazz club turned restaurant is also known as one of the most haunted buildings in the city. Broughton Street's boutique shops and restaurants are steps away for long, leisurely shops, and Kroger is less than 2 miles south for weekly grocery pickups.
Scenic strolls along the Savannah Riverwalk
Hitch Village-Fred Wessels homeowners can get outside at the scenic Savannah Riverwalk, a brick-cobbled path tracing the watery shoreline. The historic walkway is a good place to exercise or explore the quirky River Street shopping strip. Savannah is also known for the parks that center almost every square, embellished with statues, fountains, and old trees drenched in Spanish moss. Forsyth Park is also just over a mile from town, a bikeable destination and the largest park in the city.
The Savannah Arts Academy is ranked top in the state
Kids living in Hitch Village-Fred Wessels can attend the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System. Many begin at Otis J. Brock Elementary and transition to Hubert Middle, each carrying an overall C-minus score on Niche.
