Living in Lamarville: A more affordable side of Savannah
In Lamarville, Savannah starts to spread out, trading tourist-heavy blocks for rural farmland and residential subdivisions. Residents like the space and privacy the neighborhood provides, and single-family homes here are typically more budget-friendly than those closer to Midtown Savannah or Historic Savannah. At the same time, Lamarville offers easy access to interstates that lead to destinations throughout the region, keeping surrounding commercial areas, popular parks and major employers close by.
Lamarville's housing stock and home prices
Lamarville’s residential roads feel suburban. Streets are wide and walkable, some featuring sidewalks, and single-family homes sit on tidy lawns. “That area is a real hidden gem. Not a lot of people know about it,” says Wynn Martin, a Realtor with Eighteen O'Two Realty, LLC, with more than 15 years of experience selling in Savannah. “It’s affordable, and you can find a good deal on a home there.” You’ll mostly find ranch-style homes here, with a few new construction and townhouse options. Regardless of property type, prices can range from the low $100,000s to the low $400,000s.
How Lamarville’s prices compare to nearby neighborhoods
With a median residential sale price in the high $200,000s, Lamarville offers lower prices than some nearby neighborhoods. Here’s how prices in the neighborhood compare to other areas:
Midtown Savannah has a median sale price in the high $300,000s.
Ardsley Park-Chatham Crescent, an established and historic neighborhood, has a median sale price in the high $600,000s.
Oakdale, a Southside neighborhood, has a median sale price in the high $400,000s.
“Prices in that part of the city are definitely more affordable, but there’s also a good amount of revitalization pushing that way,” says Jeb Stewart, associate broker of The Stewart Team Real Estate who has sold many homes in the area. “It’s seeing some new construction, either from tear-downs and rebuilds or infill. That’s a trend throughout West Savannah.”
What the commute’s like from Lamarville
Veterans Parkway runs through the center of Lamarville, and Chatham Area Transit buses serve the community. Bordering the neighborhood are Veterans Parkway and Interstate 516, which becomes East DeRenne Avenue and eventually Harry S. Truman Parkway, Savannah's main north-south thoroughfare, giving residents access to the region's attractions and key destinations. Here’s what’s nearby:
Hunter Army Airfield, a major employer, is about 5 miles east.
Historic Savannah, which features spots like Forsyth Park and the River Street shopping, dining and entertainment corridor, is roughly 7 miles away.
Pooler, with a manufacturing and logistics jobs hub, is about 12 miles west.
Tybee Island, a laid-back beach town, is about 20 miles east.
Even with city accessibility, Lamarville’s residential areas stay relatively quiet. “There isn’t a lot of traffic because people aren’t driving through there to get somewhere else,” Martin says.
Things to do in Lamarville
Lamarville may be a short drive from Savannah’s hotspots, but there’s also plenty going on in the neighborhood. Sky Zone Trampoline Park and Planet Fitness sit next to each other on Ogeechee Road, offering indoor recreation. For time outside, two neighborhood parks with shaded picnic areas, playgrounds, swing sets and basketball courts are in Lamarville: Lamarville Park and Westlake Neighborhood Park.
Shopping and dining in and around Lamarville
Various commercial centers line Ogeechee Road, which makes up Lamarville’s northern boundary. In the neighborhood, Savannah West Center offers everyday services and casual dining options. Berwick Marketplace in Berwick features a Kroger grocery store, ACE Hardware and a wide variety of dining options, from well-known chains to local spots. Southside Savannah’s retail options along Abercorn Street aren’t far either, with a roughly 3-mile drive leading to the adjacent Abercorn Walk and Twelve Oaks shopping centers in Groveland-Kensington Park, which are home to high-end clothing stores, local restaurants and grocery stores. Oglethorpe Mall in Highland Park, the area’s only indoor mall, is about 5 miles away. Because of Lamarville’s location in southwest Savannah, residents have easy access to shopping and dining in Georgetown and Richmond Hill, too.
