Find digs next to spacious Daffin Park

With a home in the Oakland Park-Northgate-Eastgate area, one of Savannah’s unmistakable landmarks is always around the corner. This section of the city is in the shadow of Daffin Park, an 80-acre recreational paradise whose features include Grayson Stadium, home of the renowned Savannah Bananas exhibition baseball team. The best part is that this park is just a short walk or short drive from everyone in this neighborhood.

Desirable midcentury homes fill the area

Most of the single-family houses around Oakland Park-Northgate-Eastgate were built between the 1950s and the 1970s. Many of these homes are single-story ranchers and bungalows that start at about 800 square feet and reach roughly 1,800 square feet. Some of the homes here were originally built smaller than they currently are, but were added on later, says local Realtor Tommy Danos, of ERA Southeast Coastal Real Estate. Properties here line quiet residential streets and some of them feature sidewalks. Lots in this area span from about one-tenth of an acre to one-fifth of an acre. Houses here sell for prices anywhere from the $200,000s to the $500,000s depending on the size. People want to get their hands on these properties, too. “They’re sought after,” says Danos, who has been selling in the area for well over 20 years. “There’s usually not a whole lot available in there because it is convenient to a whole lot of things.”

Daffin Park dominates list of recreational opportunities

Daffin Park dates back to the early 20th century — it was completed in 1909 and is named after Philip Daffin, who was the first chairman of the Savannah Park and Tree Commission. The park grounds are loaded with tall oak trees, draped with Spanish moss. Daffin features all manner of athletic fields, basketball, tennis and volleyball courts, a playground and even a pool. Grayson Stadium here, home of the Bananas, seats 4,000. The Bananas have garnered national attention for their in-game dancing and costumes, and they’re a big draw in town. “I’ve got a friend who moved to that area and she goes all the time,” Danos says. Another recreation option in the Oakland Park-Northgate-Eastgate area is the Police Memorial Trail, a roughly half-mile cycling and walking path.

Students can settle into Savannah’s small class sizes

Then, students advance to Johnson High, a C-rated school with a 13-1 student-teacher ratio. Johnson High keeps its students and their families informed with programs like Senior Parent Night on graduation requirements and community service opportunities and Dual Enrollment Night on opportunities to earn college credit while at Johnson.

Events touch down at Daffin Park

The Savannah Bananas schedule runs from February to September, but their games are one of multiple events that take place at Daffin Park. Daffin, for instance, hosts stops from Farm Truck 912, a mobile farmers market offering fruits and vegetables. The park has also hosted rugby tournaments, road races, and the Savannah Music Festival Community Family Jam, full of live jazz and blues.

Also, East Victory Drive is loaded with bus stops in the Chatham Area Transit system, which has 60 buses and 16 routes to travel around the city.

Shopping as simple as a drive down the street

The residential sectors in Oakland Park-Northgate-Eastgate are tranquil, but residents can leave home, hit East Victory Drive and reach multiple retail and dining options in minutes. The Victory Square shopping center here features a Target, a Home Depot and a movie theater. Geneva’s Famous Chicken and Cornbread Co. is a popular restaurant in the plaza, not just for its chicken but also for its turkey wings. There’s also a Whole Foods down the street, which Danos says is a big draw. “You even see the potential for even more stuff going in that area,” Danos says. “They put in Chick-fil-A not long ago.”
