Cozy, quiet and conveniently located in Midtown Savannah
Sylvan Terrace, a cozy neighborhood of established homes on the southern edge of Midtown Savannah, offers a quiet suburban setting while being conveniently located within the city. Typical of Savannah, the neighborhood comprises tranquil, tree-lined streets. The housing, developed primarily between the early 1950s and early 1960s, features a collection of midcentury homes with large yards that complement the wooded landscape and offer more living space than the smaller homes in other Midtown neighborhoods. Though Sylvan Terrace is small, it has enough room for its own middle school and community green space. Residents also enjoy proximity to retail and dining, including a quaint shopping village that has been a Savannah staple for decades.
Ranch-style homes and large yards are common
Traditional ranch-style homes on spacious lots are prominent among the neighborhood’s housing. In addition to large yards, these homes also feature an attached garage or carport. The latter is standard on the midcentury-modern homes that also make their presence felt with unmistakable angular designs. Multi-level options stand out and include a collection of established homes and the occasional contemporary custom home built after a teardown. Prices typically range between the mid-200,000s and the mid-500,000s. The average home value is a little more than $360,000.
Mercer Middle School is located in the neighborhood
The neighborhood is home to Mercer Middle, a school that Niche gives an overall C grade, but an A-minus for diversity. Younger students can attend nearby Jacob G. Smith Elementary, a B-plus-rated school, and older students can attend Beach High School, also C-rated. The high school held a ribbon-cutting for a state-of-the-art campus in 2013, but it is one of the city’s oldest institutions, with roots stretching back to 1867. Its monthly Saturday School program offers an opportunity for students to stay up to date on academic requirements.
Neighborhood park one of the city's newest green spaces
Sharing its name with the neighborhood, the park adjacent to the middle school was built in 2019 as part of a city initiative to increase available green space. Sylvan Terrace Park, surrounded by a paved quarter-mile pathway, features a playground and fitness stations. Daffin Park, a Midtown jewel, is only a few miles away. Designed in the early 1900s, the sprawling picturesque green space includes Grayson Stadium, home of the Savannah Bananas, a nationally known barnstorming baseball team. Daffin Park also hosts pee wee league games on its football field and is the site of citywide events, including charity runs and rugby tournaments.
Well-known Habersham Village highlights shopping options
Jones’ Red & White Food Store is a full-service grocer that anchors Habersham Village, a Midtown staple located a couple blocks east of the neighborhood. The quaint, walkable district provides an array of retail and dining options. Residents can enjoy a relaxing meal in the cozy confines of Coffee Deli, and peruse the decadent selections at River Sweet Treats, a Savannah institution for more than 50 years known for its pralines. Additional retail and dining options are concentrated along Derenne Avenue, which forms the neighborhood’s south side, and just south of that in neighboring Groveland-Kensington Park, where a Fresh Market and Publix can be found.
Convenient public transportation and nearby highways
Montgomery Street, which forms the neighborhood’s west side, is populated with Chatham Area Transit bus stops, providing convenient public transportation for local travel. Derenne Avenue becomes Lynes Parkway heading west and eventually Interstate 516 before connecting with Veterans Parkway a little more than 2 miles away.
