Outdoorsy living in the forests of Savoy
Savoy is a small town in the forested hills of Massachusetts' Berkshire County. For much of its history, the sawmill industry took advantage of Savoy's densely wooded habitat. Today, the sawmills are gone, leaving an expanse of state forests and mountain lakes. "People here are outdoorsy; they're fishermen, skiers, hikers. That kind of lifestyle," says Realtor Diane Thorson with William Pitt Sotheby's, who's been selling in Berkshire County and Western Massachusetts since 2022. Many of these woodland towns have become escapes for people from the coast, but Savoy remains a truly rural location. "Some of these areas in the mountains of Western Mass and Upstate New York have become high-end destinations," says Thorson. "But Savoy is still very relaxed." There isn't much out here besides cabins and trees, and that's exactly what residents come for.

Cabins and farmhouses with acreage
Savoy still has the typical living spaces of a New England mountain town. Cabins and farmhouses are tucked in woods off country roads. Buyers can find different amounts of space based on their desired lifestyle. "You have people looking out here for a second place just to be in the outdoors," says Thorson. "Then, you've got people looking to move out here to live the full-time rural lifestyle with lots of land and animals." The median home price is about $285,000. Most of the secluded cabins and 1800s farmhouses are around the median. Options with 10-plus acres and an auxiliary barn can cost closer to $350,000.

Hiking, fishing and skiing in the Berkshires
The Berkshires are best known as a haven of outdoor activity, and Savoy is a perfect example. The woodsy community is close to the Savoy Mountain State Forest, Windsor State Forest, nature preserves and other expanses of wooded wilderness. Hikers can access miles of trails and take extensive treks to sites like Balance Rock and Tannery Falls. There are large mountain ponds throughout the area, like Bog Pond and South Pond, where people can fish and paddle. During the winter, skiing and snowmobiling become the popular activities. This could be cross-country or on slopes like Stump Sprouts Ski Touring Center.

Moving between North Berkshire and Hoosac Valley schools
Because of Savoy's rural location, the only school in the immediate area is Emma L. Miller Elementary, rated a C by Niche. It teaches kindergarten through sixth grade and is part of the North Berkshire School Union. "If students are staying here for middle and high school, they go to Hoosac Valley Schools in Adams," says Thorson. The Hoosac Valley Regional School District receives a C-plus from Niche. Hoosac Valley Middle and High is the school students move on to, and it also earns a C-plus.
