Community spirit and a highly-rated school district in Scarsdale
A suburban oasis in Westchester County, Scarsdale, 28 miles from New York City, is favored for its highly rated school district, proximity to public transportation and sense of community. The suburbanization of Scarsdale began in 1891 with Arthur Manor, a corner of the Edgewood neighborhood and the first suburban community in the once-rural area. Scarsdale was touted as an escape from the over-crowded New York City, promising no industry and little commercial business, just single-family homes and a train station. While regulation and zoning laws have changed over time, Scarsdale remains a largely suburban area with two shopping centers, one in Heathcote, where the original train station once stood, and another surrounding the Metro-North railroad in Old Scarsdale. Neighborhoods are organized around the five Scarsdale elementary schools and then further divided into 17 neighborhood associations. Originally, neighborhood associations were a way for residents to provide input about local elections and general town decisions, says Jordan Copeland, the Scarsdale village historian with the Scarsdale Historical Society. Now, neighborhood societies welcome new neighbors and put on community events. Some neighborhood associations charge for membership, but most are small volunteer groups. “We have neighborhood associations. Pretty much every area has a neighborhood association,” says Anne Moretti, a Scarsdale resident and real estate agent with Julia B. Fee Sotheby's International Realty. “Some are looser than others, with not many rules, and some neighborhood associations have very regular activities and everything.” Property and violent crime in Scarsdale are well below the national and state average. Scarsdale has a population of 17,747 as of 2023, according to the United States Census Bureau.

Grand, revival-style homes
Scarsdale is known for its grand and uniquely styled homes. Homes are mainly in revival styles and were usually built in the 1920s and 30s, with renovations in the early 2000s. Popular home styles throughout Scarsdale are Tudor Revival, Colonial Revival, Dutch Colonial Revival, Cape Cod and split-level. Quaker Ridge has a few new traditional and postmodern builds, while Old Scarsdale is one of the only areas offering co-ops and condo options near the Metro-North Railroad. The average home value in Scarsdale is over $3 million, higher than the national median. Prices vary per neighborhood, with Edgewood considered on the lower end, boasting homes averaging $2.26 million and Murray Hill Middle Heathcote on the higher end, averaging $4.87 million. “It’s more expensive than other places,” acknowledges Copeland. “But other places have just as high taxes but not as good services. Sanitation will go right up to your driveway; take your garbage or recycling and go off. You don’t have to wheel your garbage down to the street.”

Shopping and dining at Five Corners and The Village
Shopping and dining centers are marked by large Tudor Revival-style buildings housing various retailers and eateries. The intersection of Heathcote Road, Weaver Street, Wilmot Road and Palmer Avenue make the colloquial Five Corners, where residents may shop and dine at the outdoor Golden Horseshoe Shopping Center and visit Seasons and Balducci’s for groceries. Near the Metro-North Railroad, The Village hosts popular restaurants such as Martine’s Fine Bake Shoppe, a French patisserie offering boutique baked goods, coffee and a lunch menu. Golf, swimming and hiking in Scarsdale
A large part of the northeastern section of Scarsdale is occupied by Saxon Woods Park, a 700-acre green space inside of which there is an 18-hole miniature golf course, Westchester County’s largest public swimming pool and a vast trail system through old-growth forests dating back to colonial times. On the east side is a wooded and paved 10-mile trail along the Bronx River. The Fenway Golf Club and The Quaker Ridge Country Club both offer private courses designed in the early 20th century. Winston Fields and Crossway Fields are the site of local sporting events for Scarsdale youth. Nearby, the Scarsdale Municipal Pool has four pools and is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The pool complex celebrates the Fourth of July with fireworks and a live band, says Angela Manson, a resident of Scarsdale and associate broker with Julia B Fee Sotheby's International Realty. The Weinberg Nature Center in East Quaker Ridge was donated in 1958 by a refugee from Nazi-occupied Holland. Here residents can enjoy nature trails, local flora and fauna, summer camps and educational programs for children and adults.

Summers by the sound and holiday events at home
Neighborhood associations put on holiday celebrations such as the Fourth of July or local tree lightings. The Scarsdale Public Library hosts regular events for the community from Storytimes and book clubs to creativity retreats for teens and creative writing workshops. Scarsdale sees all four seasons, and the weather turns chilly in December. Lights shine on the freshly fallen snow as residents gather at Boniface Circle near the Scarsdale train station to Light the ‘Dale, a way to kick off the holiday season with a tree and menorah lighting. During the event, carolers sing classic holiday tunes while attendees sip on hot chocolate while waiting in line to get a picture with Santa or perusing the food trucks. In the summer, many residents are beachbound due to the humid weather. Harbor Island Park Beach, 5 miles away, offers boating on the Long Island Sound and relaxing by the water.
