Scenery Hill is a historic rural village on the National Road

Before Scenery Hill’s main street was called U.S. Route 40, its status as the first federally funded interstate highway earned it the names the National Road and the National Pike. While big cities and former coal patch towns stake claim to the road from New Jersey to Utah, this Washington County village's small businesses and event planners have worked to make it a significant hub of history for modern travelers. For people sticking around this Pennsylvania area for longer than the annual Pike Days festivities, however, much of the appeal of Scenery Hill lies in the sweeping vistas of forested hills and farmland that draw eyes away from the road. “Scenery Hill has a lot of beautiful homes with old character and charm, especially driving down Route 40,” says Paige Findley, a Realtor with Realty One Group Gold Standard who has seven years of experience serving southwestern Pennsylvania. “People like not being right on top of their neighbors – you can get real, peaceful, countryside living.” Surrounded by the natural beauty and tranquility of southwestern Pennsylvania, Route 40 continues serving the people of Scenery Hill in the same way it did hundreds of years ago – though they're more likely to set out for nearby county seats and downtown Pittsburgh in a car than in a covered wagon.

Historic homes and later construction on suburban plots and rural acreages

Set against distant, forested hills, the creatively styled Victorian-era homes that pocket Route 40 are a striking centerpiece for Scenery Hill. Most single-family homes in the village are simpler National styles built during the same period. In later decades, midcentury Cape Cods, ranch-style homes and later Colonial Revivals were also built along main roads and back on private, forested acreages. Homes on suburban-sized lots and small acreages typically sell for around $80,000 to $300,000, though fixer-uppers can go for less. Homes on much larger properties might go for $300,000 to $650,000, depending on their condition and whether they’re set on 10 acres or upward of 50. Creeks and streams crisscross the community, but its rolling topography keeps most homes outside of high-risk flood zones. Buyers are more likely to worry about spotty cellphone service and the merits of purchasing properties with public water access versus maintenance of wells and septic tanks.

Shopping and dining on Route 40

Route 40 is a central, old-fashioned commercial strip that runs through Scenery Hill, centered by the historic Century Inn. While the stately stone structure has been a stop for historic figures and National Road travelers like U.S. Presidents James K. Polk and Abraham Lincoln, it's also a favorite higher-end restaurant for locals and weekend visitors. Down the road, shoppers explore the boutique showroom of Two Score Reserve Mercantile or stop into Jan’s Tea Shoppe & 2nd Street Coffee Roasters for a hot drink. Beck-Ringland Tavern & Scenery Hill Brewing offers rustic hunting lodge ambiance as well as rotating themed nights for visiting food trucks, live music and open mics. A couple of small houses of worship like Mount Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church also operate along the National Road. For groceries beyond what’s available at small convenience stores and farm-fresh markets like the Cattleman’s Pantry, locals often drive several miles to the Giant Eagle in Bentleyville.

Horse-drawn carriages on the National Road for Pike Days

The National Road sees an influx of locals and tourists in Colonial garb on the third weekend of each May thanks to the return of Pike Days, also called the National Road Festival. “They don’t shut down the road, but it can be hard to drive through because they bring out the horses and carriages. Everybody does flea markets, yard sales, you see steam-powered machines, welders come out – it's cool, it reminds you how life used to be,” Findley says. While Scenery Hill hosts many of the festival’s period-appropriate craftsman booths, live musicians and vendor markets, organizers don’t call it the “world’s longest festival” for no reason: Communities all along a 90-mile stretch of the pike will welcome the covered wagon train and hold festivities of their own throughout the weekend.

Attending Bentworth, Bethlehem-Center or California Area schools

Most kids will attend Bentworth School District on their neighboring campuses, starting at Bentworth Elementary School, which earns a B-plus from Niche. Bentworth Middle and Bentworth High schools each earn a B. Students at Bentworth High can choose to enroll in career preparatory programs offered at the Mon Valley Career and Technology Center. Those living on the village’s southern and eastern outskirts may attend Bethlehem-Center School District, which earns a C-minus, or California Area School District, which earns a B-minus.

The North Bethlehem Community Center and nearby rural recreation

Though Scenery Hill is richer with rural recreation centers, an old school building is now the North Bethlehem Community Center, which offers rentable event space and a small playground out back. When residents aren’t hunting and fishing on their own properties, they might head out to the fields and forests of State Game Lands Number 297. Places like the Ellsworth Sportsman’s Club offer access to private shooting ranges and members-only restaurants and social events.

Driving toward county hubs and Pittsburgh commuter highways on Route 40

Route 40 offers a roughly 12-mile drive to Washington and 25-mile drive to Uniontown, each of them home to county seat offices and major regional employers like the UPMC Washington and WVU Medicine Uniontown hospitals. Longer-distance commuters will take the National Road to Interstate 79 on the roughly 40-mile drive to Pittsburgh. Washington County’s fixed route buses do not serve Scenery Hill, so residents will need a personal vehicle to get around. Pittsburgh International Airport is more than 45 miles away.
