Residents can see for miles from Scenery Hill in North Bethlehem
Rural landscapes dotted with single-family homes make up the neighborhood of North Bethlehem. Situated about 40 miles south of Pittsburgh in southeastern Pennsylvania, residents have access to interstates nearby, but can find homes dating back a century or two within. “There’s a lot of history there,” says Michelle Rollins, a real estate broker for simpliHOM. “That’s one of the biggest draws. There are quite a few 1800s-style homes. A friend of mine even restored a log cabin right there in Scenery Hill.” Route 40 meanders through the neighborhood, and while modern-day drivers trace the landscape on the thoroughfare, the road itself traces the history of the area. The unincorporated community of Scenery Hill lies within the neighborhood, and that area continues to act as a landmark and attraction thanks to its vantage points. “The views are beautiful,” Rollins says. “Scenery Hill got its name because of the views. On the pike, depending on the day, you can see Pittsburgh and West Virginia.”
Single-family homes occupying much of North Bethlehem
Similar to many of the surrounding neighborhoods, North Bethlehem primarily consists of single-family homes amid a hilly, pastoral landscape. “You see fewer ranch-style homes and more farmhouse-style homes,” Rollins says. “It’s definitely more farms heading that way and animal farms. North Bethlehem also has more crops than we see in places like Somerset.” Ranch-style homes are still common in the area, along with the farmhouses and some split-levels and Cape Cods. Depending on location and acreage, homes can range from less than $100,000 to around $300,000.
Crime in North Bethlehem receives a CAP score of 1 out of 10, which is significantly lower than the nationwide score of 4.

Local restaurants along Route 40
The few restaurants that sit within North Bethlehem are mostly concentrated around Route 40. The Tradesmen’s Inn dishes out casual fare like pizza, wings and sandwiches, while the Century Inn sits just down the road, dates to the late 1700s, and offers both brunch and dinner. “A lot of people know the Century Inn,” Rollins says. “People come from Pittsburgh to go there.” The Hilltop Market and Pizzeria sits on the east side in Cokeburg. “There are a couple local shops and restaurants, but there’s not really any shopping,” Rollins says of North Bethlehem. “People go to Rostraver or Washington for that.” Grocery shoppers can find local produce at Vistamont Farms or head about 11 miles west to Washington, where a Shop ‘N Save and Giant Eagle are located.

Parks around the North Bethlehem area
Though North Bethlehem itself doesn’t have many established parks within its boundaries, residents flock to the surrounding areas for recreation. “In that area, they mostly go to Ten Mile Creek County Park, which is close by,” Rollins says. “There’s an outdoors association for that area. They’re the ones who kind of organize all the outdoor events for that whole region. The first day of trout season is a big thing, and the organization has private fishing holes for people.” The park is less than 15 miles south of North Bethlehem. The Leatherman Covered Bridge is on the National Register of Historic Places and is one of many such historic structures in southeastern Pennsylvania. A portion of State Game Lands 297, which spans over 600 acres, sits in the neighborhood and accommodates hunting and trapping.

A single main road in the neighborhood
Part of the appeal for many residents of North Bethlehem is the lack of many major highways in the vicinity. “Route 40 is the main road that runs through the area,” Rollins says. “It’s not super close to the highway. It’s country roads through a lot of Scenery Hill and a lot of no-lane roads.” Interstate 70 on-ramps are less than 10 miles north of the neighborhood center, and Interstate 79 sits less than 10 miles west. I-79 also links the area with Pittsburgh, about 40 miles north. Morgantown, West Virginia, is over 50 miles south of North Bethlehem.
An annual commemoration of Route 40
What began as a trail used by Native Americans evolved into the first federal highway in the United States. Known locally as Bethlehem Pike, Route 40 serves as the site of a 90-mile celebration held annually on the third weekend in May. Since the area can trace parts of its history back to Route 40, also known as the National Road, the region celebrates those ties each year. “Scenery Hill is famous for Pike Days,” Rollins says. “The national pike runs right through it, and Pike Days is an event that draws people from everywhere. It’s a great, small community.” The National Road Pike Days Festival is known as the “world’s longest festival” due to multiple communities along a span of about 90 miles holding celebrations. Live music and a wagon train are among the festival’s hallmarks.
