Schroeppel has horse farms and outdoor recreation
Schroeppel, 18 miles from Syracuse, New York, is a rural town with farmland and open green spaces. “It’s a big horse farm area and it’s not too far from the Salmon River,” says Susan Li, an associate broker with Coldwell Banker Prime Properties. Li has sold over 1,000 properties in the past 23 years. “If you are an outdoorsman and you like to fish, the salmon fishing is quite extraordinary.” Within the town is the village of Phoenix, which is the most populous and borders the Oswego River. The hamlet of Sand Ridge is more rural and is near the Oneida River.
Hiking, swimming and fishing on rivers and lakes
Phoenix has several parks, including Henley Park, a stretch of greenery with a dock along the Oswego and some tables and chairs for visitors to use as they enjoy the scenery. The river connects to the Erie Canal and is used for fishing and boating. William J. Farley Community Park is near Schroeppel Town Hall and has several baseball and softball fields and a playground. Pleasant Lake Campground, near Sand Ridge, has trailer and tent sites with a few cabins for rent. Campers may kayak, swim and fish in the adjoining Pleasant Lake, or use the volleyball pit. There's also a playground for children. Off Barnard Road, the private 18-hole Beaver Meadows Golf Club has a pool and a clubhouse for dining and events.
Less than a mile from Schroeppel, the Great Bear Recreational Trails offer an 11-mile system for hiking, mountain biking, horse riding and snowshoeing. Leashed dogs are welcome. Oneida Lake is 9 miles away and has boat launches and marinas. On the lake, Verona Beach State Park is popular for swimming and picnicking. The Salmon River, about 26 miles away, is a popular spot for catching coho, steelhead, Atlantic and Chinook salmon from September through November.
Homes on gridded streets and farmland
Most homes sit along winding roadways surrounded by farmland and dense greenery. These houses often have wells and septic tanks. Homes closer to Phoenix sit along gridded streets with sidewalks, have small, manicured lots and have access to public water and sewer systems. National, split-level and ranch-style homes are common. They range from $75,000 to $500,000. The Oswego and Oneida rivers border Schroeppel, and both may flood during inclement weather.
Phoenix Central schools get Bs and Cs
Phoenix Central School District serves most of the area and gets a B-minus from Niche. Michael A. Maroun Elementary gets a C-plus. Emerson J. Dillon Middle School gets a B-minus. John C. Birdlebough High School gets a B and offers career and technical courses at the Center for Instruction, Technology & Innovation in Mexico, New York. A small number of students may attend schools in the Central Square School District, which gets a B-minus from Niche.
Taking Onondaga Lake Parkway to Syracuse, state Route 481 to Oswego
“The town of Schroeppel is very remote,” says Li. Onondaga Lake Parkway leads to Syracuse in about 30 minutes. Fulton is 10 miles away using Biddlecum Road. State Route 481 leads 21 miles to Oswego. St. Joseph’s Health Primary Care Center Liverpool is 14 miles away, and Syracuse Hancock International Airport is 18 miles away. Most houses of worship, such as First Congregational United Church of Christ, First United Methodist Church of Phoenix and St. Stephen’s Church, are in Phoenix.
Casual dining in Phoenix and Sand Ridge
Duskee’s Sports Bar & Grill is a rustic diner and pub serving American comfort and bar food in Phoenix. Maryann’s Country Time Café is an eccentrically decorated bakery that serves breakfast and lunch, with a haddock dinner on Fridays off state Route 264. Monirae’s is a bar in Sand Ridge that serves pub fare and has live entertainment. There’s a DG Market in Phoenix and a Wegmans 8 miles away near Syracuse for groceries.
Fall celebration with music and food
Phoenix has an annual Locktoberfest to celebrate the fall season, featuring live music and vendors. The festival takes place along State Street in late September or early October and is hosted by Phoenix Rising. This group hosts events and uses the proceeds for future gatherings and beautification projects.
