Diverse communities in Schuylkill Township
Schuylkill Township, part of Northeastern Pennsylvania's mountainous Schuylkill County, offers small clusters of homes and rural properties with larger lot sizes. Realtor Nada Laguna says the county has a diverse mix of environments. “Half of it is coal region, some thriving a little more than others," says the St. Clair resident who has more than 20 years of experience selling homes. "Then you go south, and you have an agricultural area that's a little more spread out. But they all have that hometown feel.” Schuylkill Township is right in the middle of the county with coal operations to the north, and farms to the south.
Traditional home styles starting around $75,000
Homebuyers can find National- and colonial-style homes from around the 1920s, as well as more modern split-levels and ranch-style properties. Most houses are arranged in unincorporated communities like Brockton and Mary D, but some are along winding backroads with larger lot sizes. Properties typically sell for $75,000 to $175,000. Some homes have also been converted into townhouses and can range from $50,000 to $150,000.
Tech education at Tamaqua Area Senior High
Students may attend Tamaqua Elementary, which gets a C from Niche, before going to Tamaqua Area Middle, which also receives a C. Tamaqua Area Senior High earns a B-minus and partners with the Schuylkill Technology Center to offer programs in fields like architecture and health sciences.
Municipal parks, nearby game lands
The Mary D Baseball Field hosts the town’s little league games and has a walking path that wraps around the diamond and grassy fields. Close to Tamaqua, Bungalow Park is a large municipal space with a pool and splash pad, a basketball court and a picnic area. Less than 10 miles south, State Game Lands Number 222 offers nearly 2,000 acres for activities like hunting and horseback riding.
Dollar General in town, local restaurants in Tamaqua
There’s a Dollar General on Valley Street for essentials. Residents can also drive 5 miles east to Tamaqua for more chains like Boyer's Food Market. There are also locally owned dining spots like La Dolce Casa for authentic Italian dishes. “I hear a lot of great things about it, and it’s always busy,” says Laguna. Tamaqua Station Restaurant is another popular option, serving American favorites from a historic train station that was converted in 2016.
