Scituate's Irish heritage and natural beauty
While Scituate is known as the most Irish town in America, it’s a welcoming community for people of all backgrounds. The town’s happening harbor, picturesque lighthouse and seasonal events attract visitors from all over Massachusetts and beyond in the summer. "It sits in an idyllic location between Boston and The Cape with 7 miles of coastline to enjoy,” says Karen Canfield, member of the board of directors at the Scituate Visitors Center. “There’s an abundance of natural beauty in the coastline, marshes, forest and walking trails.” Scituate is also an easy commute to Boston with two commuter rails.
Scituate Harbor offers a diverse range of shopping and dining options, all set against stunning views.

Unique neighborhoods with a $1 million price point
“We have very distinct neighborhoods with their own character,” Canfield says. “West End has larger lots, and it feels like you wouldn’t know you’re on the coast. East of 3A is a more traditional suburban area, and Sand Hills has smaller bungalows that used to be summer homes, and now people live there year-round.” The median price of a single-family in Scituate is around $1 million, and the median townhouse price is closer to $1.5 million. Homes currently for sale in the Humarock neighborhood range from $845,000 to just under $2 million.

Scituate Public Schools and a winning football team
The town is served by Scituate Public Schools, which earns an A-minus on Niche. "We have a brand-new middle school complex, and we’re breaking ground on a new elementary school combining two of our four elementary schools,” Canfield says. Lester J. Gates Middle School has an A-rating. Scituate High School serves just over 750 students and receives an A-minus score. SHS’s football team, the Scituate Sailors, won the state championship in 2024. South Shore Vocational Technical High School is an alternative option for those wanting to learn a vocation like computer information technology or cosmetology.

A foodie town with a happening harbor
Scituate has one of the liveliest harbors on the South Shore, with many bars, restaurants and shops. “It's a foodie town; everyone comes to eat in Scituate whether they live there or not,” Canfield says. “I’ve lived there 30 years, and that’s not how it used to be.” Lucky Finn Cafe has a waterfront location on the harbor and serves acai bowls named after Scituate’s different beaches. The Mill Wharf is a seafood spot on the water. The harbor has a movie theater and a Village Market grocery store, but residents will have to drive a few extra miles for larger stores and chain restaurants. “The chains are in Cohasset,” Canfield says. “Our part of 3A is protected from commercial areas, so you hit our border, and it's just green.”
"The Opening of the Harbor kicks off the summer,” Canfield says. “It’s a celebration of our coastal heritage that takes place both on and off the water." In the summer, there’s live music at the Scituate Harbor Gazebo., and the Scituate Rotary Farmers Market is open Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. May through September. The town’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade celebrates its Irish heritage.

Sandy beaches, conservation land and golf courses
Peggotty Beach has sandy shores and waves that are ideal for surfing. It’s one of six public beaches in Scituate, including Minot Beach, which has views of Massachusetts Bay. Boaters have several marinas, boat clubs, and boat ramps from which to choose. Hikers and mountain bikers have several acres of conservation land to explore. Conservation Park is a scenic walking area by a marsh. There are smaller neighborhood parks and playgrounds throughout town as well. Scituate has a few golf courses, with Widow’s Walk being the only public course.

Accessible by major roads and commuter rails
"The town is accessible by most points along M.A. Route 3A, and it’s 15 minutes off of M.A. Route 3, which is a major interstate,” Canfield says. Those wishing to avoid the traffic can take the MBTA commuter rail to Boston. “It reliably takes an hour to get to Boston, sometimes shorter or longer,” Canfield says. “There are two stops in town, which are both accessible by trails that are bigger than sidewalks, and people can walk or ride bikes.” Logan International Airport is about a 30-mile drive on M.A. Route 3, which does have tolls. Winter storms, also called Nor'easters, are prevalent in the area.
