A farming community close to North Little Rock

Farmland stretches to the horizon in Scott, an unincorporated community on the edge of North Little Rock. It is a place where open space is considered a feature, not something to fill with dozens of shops and restaurants. “Most of the people out here are coming out here because they want out of the city,” says Brooke Setzer, the owner of Old River Coffee Company, a drive-through coffee shop and bakery in a green wooden building. “They want it to be a little quieter, not as busy. It’s a different pace out here.” Setzer says the neighborhood’s residents appreciate the amenities they do have and often venture into city life for those they do not.

Plum Bayou Archeological State Park preserves history

The Willow Beach Recreation Area and Campground gives guests an opportunity to fish in Willow Beach Lake or sleep near red foxes and deer in the park’s forested area. Plum Bayou Mounds Archeological State Park was once a ceremonial place for local Native Americans. The park now works to uncover and preserve that history. Reservations for guided tours should be made in advance as it often gets crowded. In contrast, nearby Lorance Creek Natural Area is a quiet swamp filled with cypress and tupelo trees. More than 125 species of birds call the area home — as do water moccasins and other reptiles. The Rose City Community Center has tennis courts and a basketball court.

The Curve Market has local meat and produce

The community’s Scott Station is a Southern restaurant in a railroad-themed space. Next door, The Curve Market sells produce, beef and other homemade treats with ingredients sourced from local farms. Both places have partnerships with Scott Charter School, teaching students about growing and selling produce and letting them work in their businesses. Setzer's Old River Coffee Company gets customers coffee and baked goods on the go. Residents have to drive into Little Rock or North Little Rock to buy groceries from places like Kroger or Value Foods. Setzer says Scott residents do not mind the drive and will often head into the city for its restaurants. In North Little Rock, Shotgun Dan’s Pizza serves classic pies in an Old West environment. In Little Rock, The Root Cafe uses local ingredients to make burgers, sandwiches and salads. North Little Rock’s McCain Mall has more than 80 retail stores.
