Scott City is conveniently connected to Cape Girardeau and Jackson
Scott City is a community of slightly over 4,000 residents, located south of Cape Girardeau near one of the many bends of the mighty Mississippi River. “Scott City has a really small-town atmosphere. It’s definitely more rural,” says Kim Baker, a sales associate with Century 21 Ashland Realty, who has about 18 years of experience. “Not that we’re big-city Cape Girardeau. The great thing about it is you can get to Cape in about 10 minutes.” An interstate connects the community to larger grocery stores and other amenities in Cape Girardeau.
Weathered driveways lead to Craftsman cottages and ranch-style homes
Residential streets devoid of sidewalks branch off of Main Street, while weathered driveways — some no more than a strip of gravel — lead to a variety of older homes. Craftsman cottages from the 1910s and 1920s with elaborate detailing, as well as more minimal houses from the following decades, range from $75,000 to $210,000. Homes like these come on up to a third of an acre with room for detached garages or sheds. Ranch-style and split-level homes built during the 1960s and 1970s often have attached carports. Fetching between $100,000 and $350,000, many of these homes come on acreage as well. Scott City’s CAP Index Crime Score is 2 out of 10, which is lower than the national average of 4.
Cape Lacroix Bluffs Conservation Area and Scott City Park
On the very north edge of town, City Park fills 50 acres of land with a sand volleyball court, horseshoe pits and an 18-hole disc golf course. Towering trees with rich foliage make the park’s playground a respite from the sun, while its concert stage welcomes various live music acts. The park is also home to Scott City’s community pool and its Olympic-sized laps.
Even farther north, the Cape LaCroix Bluffs Conservation Area is home to wildlife like colorful wood duck, the northern cottonmouth snake and the spring cavefish, one of the rarest fish in Missouri. The area is also the site of one of the Mississippi River’s old channels, once active before glacier melt and historic flooding shifted the river's course.
Casual American fare and authentic Mexican food near Main Street
Several restaurants are clustered around Main Street, near where it passes underneath the interstate. “There are a couple of restaurants there that are good,” Baker says. “Whenever I show properties there, I try to plan it so I can hit one of those after.”
Late sleepers don’t have to rush to Berghoff’s Cafe, where breakfast is served all day; the café’s lunch menu, on the other hand, consists of casual but hearty platters, burgers and sandwiches. Vibrant, engraved chairs and booths add color to the interior of Las Brisas Authentic Mexican Restaurant. Coffee ‘N’ More serves doughnuts, pastries and lunch specials alongside its caffeinated drinks. Interstate 55 leads north to grocers and supermarkets like Target, Aldi, Schnucks and Walmart in Cape Girardeau.
Recent expansions to Scotty City High classrooms and sports facilities
Children in Scott City may begin their studies at Scott City Elementary School, which receives a C-plus grade from Niche, before moving on to Scott City Middle, scoring a B-minus. Finally, they may enroll at B-rated Scott City High School. Career technical education courses at the high school focus on industrial arts and family and consumer sciences, often shortened to FACS. A bond issued about three years ago to the high school resulted in major expansions to its athletic facilities and its classrooms.
Two highways connect Scott City to St. Louis, Cape and its airport
Main Street nearly runs the length of Scott City, intersecting with Interstate 55 and U.S. Route 61 to the west. The interstate travels north toward downtown Cape Girardeau, which is about 10 miles away, and continues to St. Louis, roughly 120 miles away. United States Route 61, on the other hand, runs south along the interstate. The Cape Girardeau Regional Airport maintains direct service to Chicago, and it’s located immediately on the opposite side of the interstate from Scott City. The Scott County Transit System provides curb-to-curb service that must be scheduled in advance.
