Westmoreland County's borough
Walking the tree-lined streets of Scottdale, a small borough in Westmoreland County about 45 miles outside Pittsburgh, it’s easy to imagine the town in its heyday. Once a railroad hub and the site of the H. C. Frick Coke Company, one of the largest coke-producing companies in the world, Scottdale was a boom town of the late 19th and early 20th century. Its abundant wealth faded with the decline of coal, but a close community and a thriving historic district remain. A Scottdale Burrough representative and 30-year resident says, “There’s a small-town feel here that’s so attractive. And we have preserved history from the industrial revolution all around us. You don’t find that other places.”
Scottdale’s historic downtown shopping
While Hoffman’s Drug Store, where residents once purchased sodas, cigars or ice cream for a nickel, is now home to the popular Fox’s Pizza Den, Scottdale’s historic downtown retains much of its original 1880s to 1950s architecture, landing it in on the National Register of Historic Places. It also remains a central gathering place as residents walk to grab their morning coffee at Bad Rabbit Café and Roastery and stay for a chat in comfy chairs or meet for drinks and all-American pub fare at Wish’s Bar and Grill. Marketplace Boutique offers eclectic gifts and houseware just down the street, and Miss Martha’s Floral invites shoppers in with a colorful Gothic storefront. Daily staples are readily available at Fulton Enterprises General Store, Rite-Aid or Dollar General.

Fall Festival and winter lights
Year-round events bring the community out in force — from the Winter Light Celebration to the Community Picnic in the Park to the annual Fall Festival, a three-day affair with food, craft vendors and entertainment. When there’s no celebration, establishments like the Great Scott Escapes escape room join the entertainment line-up alongside the Scottdale Public Library and the Geyer Performing Arts Center, which has been Scottdale’s cultural center since it was first built over 100 years ago as an opera house and vaudeville theater.
Historic Victorians and mid century farmhouses
Residential streets are quiet, and many homes near downtown feature Victorian and Queen Anne styles with broad front porches set back from the sidewalks by neatly landscaped front lawns. Homebuyers can also find early 20th-century farmhouses, colonials, foursquares and bungalows, as well as mid-century ranch houses and contemporary styles. Prices range from as low as $35,000 for a vintage home in need of updates to as high as $300,000 or more for a recently remodeled historic home or newer build. A sweeping Victorian home with four bedrooms, 3,000 square feet, preserved woodwork and stained glass might list for $290,000, while a more modestly updated colonial with four bedrooms and 1,600 square feet might go for around $90,000.

The fact that we can be on major roads within minutes means a lot to commuting people.” The Westmoreland Transit also offers bus routes to Mount Pleasant Borough, home to several large retailers, restaurants and a Walmart Supercenter.
