A small New Jersey community on the Atlantic

Located at the southern end of Monmouth County, and embracing the sparkling shores of the Atlantic Ocean, the beach town of Sea Girt offers more than just boardwalk vistas and beachside relaxation. Philadelphia Land Developers transformed this oceanside locale into a shore resort town during the 1870s, and the establishment of a National Guard base in 1887 has contributed greatly to this town’s growth, to the point where Sea Girt has been proclaimed the Summer Capital of New Jersey by visitors. This highly desirable and popular community features homes of various styles and sizes, each within immediate proximity to restaurants, parks and beaches, and less than a mile away from a NJ Transit station. “It is such a small area with such a close community,” says Lisa Luke, the library director at the Sea Girt Library, who has lived in the area for almost 11 years.

Forests and fun by the Jersey Shore

With Sea Girt being right by the water, there are multiple options for locals to enjoy the outdoors. Nature lovers can play tennis next to the thickly forested Crescent Park, which is also “one of the few maritime forests in New Jersey,” Luke says. Pondside exploration also abounds at Edgemere Park, with more wooded trails for locals to explore. But of course, the highlight of the area is Sea Girt Beach, which offers a long stretch of beach and a boardwalk unique to the neighborhood. “It is a stand-alone boardwalk because of the pond and the training center, and it is not a commercial boardwalk like others in the area; it just has a snack bar, which makes it perfect for families,” Luke says.

Modern colonials and beach houses

Sea Girt’s housing stock consists of almost no two homes being alike, from colonial revivals in the English and Dutch stylings to ranch styles, bungalows and stately Cape Cods. Many of the homes have been built in the last 50 years, giving many houses a modern feel with updated amenities. Homes are also matched with larger well-manicured lawns, often flushed with bushes and trees. The variety of styles and amenities leads to Sea Girt being one of the more expensive neighborhoods in the US, with houses ranging from $2 million to $5 million.

Sea Girt’s library and museums

The charming Sea Grit Library, located in the old train station by the elementary school, is the “heart of the neighborhood,” Luke says. There are weekly story times and annual events, like the Easter egg hunt, that help bring the community together. History buffs can also appreciate the uniforms, artillery pieces, tanks and other military artifacts at the National Guard Militia Museum. There is also the Sea Girt Lighthouse, which has been standing since 1896 and offers annual fundraisers and events alongside the fire station and library.

Big appetites in a small Jersey Shore community

Even with “only one block of the neighborhood being the commercial district,” according to Luke, the four restaurants to and scattered shops nearby are perfectly suited for any craving. One such eatery is Ray's Cafe, which has been around for generations and is "a mainstay in town for breakfasts and lunches as well as full-service catering," Luke says. Locals can also enjoy a pastry and cup of coffee at Shore Pour, “which is just simply a fabulous coffee shop,” Luke says. For a night out, Parker House has been around since 1878 and offers 11 full-stocked bars with cocktails and oyster shooters. For restocking the kitchen at home, locals are just a short drive from the Sea Girt Mall Shopping Center and a Super Foodtown just 2 miles away.

Boardwalk strolls and NJ transit trains

Walking is one of the more popular ways to get around the borough. Due to its small size, Sea Girt’s locals can often be seen biking or jogging throughout the many sidewalks that surround area homes. In fact, “walking on and to the boardwalk is a major pastime in the area,” Luke says. However, those commuting to New York City are less than a mile from the NJ Transit Manasquan station and 2 miles from the Spring Lake station. Drivers can also access Route 35 for trips up and down the Jersey Shore. For trips not reachable by car or train, Newark Liberty International Airport is 52 miles to the north. For medical care, the Hackensack Meridian Health is 5 miles south of the neighborhood.
