Just to the east of Washington D.C. sits Seat Pleasant, Maryland, an innovative suburb with a strong community atmosphere. Local events connect the neighborhood, but so do smartphones. Seat Pleasant has teamed up with IBM to become a Smart City, a community connected through technology to help improve public safety and conserve energy. Residents can use an app on their phone to process service requests, schedule garbage and snow removal and see a list of community events. “I call it the gateway to D.C.,” said Shameeka Price of Capital Structures Real Estate LLC. “It is a perfect place for people who want to have a foot in suburbia and still experience the big city. The local government is very involved, and they put together job fairs, community walks and educational development programs.”

The homes in Seat Pleasant range from ranch-style colonials going for just over $200,000 to two-story brick cottages over $500,000. Street parking is common for single-family homes while large brick townhouses, which typically sell for around $350,000 provide parking lots. Many of the homes feature large, fenced-in front yards perfect for gardening and benefit from some shade thanks to large, leafy trees. Many of the homes have been recently remodeled and renovated with environmentally friendly materials and fitted with energy-efficient appliances.

Innovation has found its way into the schools in Seat Pleasant, part of the Prince George’s County School System. Students will begin their education at Seat Pleasant Elementary School, a pre-K to sixth-grade institution that offers online learning resources for scholars to continue their studies after school hours. Next, kids may attend Walker Mill Middle School, which provides online resources for children and parents. Finally, students can enter a French Immersion or International Baccalaureate program at Central High School. Central is the only school in the district to offer the French Immersion program and its IB program prepares students for success in college and life beyond.

Goodwin Park offers a scenic place for families to come together as children can climb playground equipment amid thick cherry blossoms. Goodwin Park hosts community events throughout the year, and private parties can rent the pavilion and picnic area for events while the baseball diamond, tennis courts and basketball courts are always open to the public. For even more basketball, head to the Seat Pleasant Activity Center — NBA superstar Kevin Durant grew up in the area and has since donated new basketball courts and equipment to the center. The center also houses a full gymnasium, a game room and playgrounds. For a serious workout, check out Planet Fitness for full weight and cardio rooms.

You won’t need to search far for delicious soul food in Seat Pleasant. Keith & Sons boasts offerings from salmon to oxtail with homemade cakes to finish off the perfect meal. Dodah’s is just down the street, cooking up vegan soul food inspired by Afro-vegan traditions. Shopping is easy with a Harris Teeter and a Target just miles away. With D.C. just down the road, the options for foodies are endless. There is also no shortage of shopping and entertainment spots due to the proximity to the capital. “Many people take the metro into the city for date nights or to do shopping on the weekends. It is so convenient to be in the city without having to battle traffic.”

Between an innovative community that cares about your future and easy access to the nation’s capital, you’d be smart to check out Seat Pleasant.
