Chinatown charm
Past and present blend in Seattle's Chinatown-International District, also known as C-ID. Chinese workers initially moved to the area heavily, creating one of Seattle's oldest communities. Eventually, the current neighborhood was established near King Street in the early 1900s. Over the next century, Japanese, Filipino, Vietnamese, Cambodian and Malay immigrants settled in the surrounding area. The Chinatown-International District has remained resilient over many years of change and growth. Civic associations, local businesses and residents continue to band together to support the community and create a bright future. "This is a very historic area; residents and tourists both come to experience the unique vibes of C-ID," says Flossie Pennington, facility coordinator of Arts at King Street, located in the neighborhood. "History is a big part of the identity here, but so is art; there are galleries on almost every block. Both of those aspects bring in lots of tourists, but at the same time, there are more families with kids in C-ID than in most neighborhoods around Seattle."

A taste of C-ID
Along King Street, visitors will find a mix of shops, noteworthy restaurants and significant cultural institutions. Many locals start their day at Hood Famous, near the neighborhood's iconic Historic Chinatown Gate. Visitors can grab a signature ube latte or freshly baked bun at this Filipino bakery and cafe. In the evenings, Hood Famous becomes a cocktail bar serving unique drinks and Filipino bar food. For dinner, one can also stop by Maneki, which has served sushi and other Japanese classics since 1904. Another popular option is Mike's Noodle House, a Cantonese restaurant known for its rich soups that are great for a chilly night. "There are amazing restaurants everywhere," Pennington says. "Pretty much anything you want, you can find just around the corner here. There are great burger spots and places to grab quick lunches, but also so many awesome authentic Vietnamese, Filipino and Japanese."

Community institutions and events
As pedestrians take in the sights along King Street, they might feel compelled to stop by Pink Gorilla Games. This unique game and novelty shop is a go-to for video games, board games and toys. Nearby, Wing Luke Museum champions local and visiting Asian American, Pacific Islander and Native Hawaiian artists. The museum supports and empowers the community with educational exhibits, regular programs and events throughout the year. Lumen Field, home of the Seattle Seahawks, borders the neighborhood to the west. C-ID and the surrounding streets swell by almost 70,000 people on many Sundays in the fall and winter. For any "12th man" considering the neighborhood, the hallowed stadium is only around a 1-mile walk from even the furthest corner of C-ID.

Historic C-ID living
While the neighborhood is primarily renter-based, there are usually a handful of opportunities to buy a condo here. Attractions and amenities
Just south of King Street on Fifth Avenue is the flagship store Uwajimaya, which has been serving the public for almost 100 years. In addition to groceries, Uwajimaya has Pan-Asian specialty items, a full-service seafood and sashimi counter, a food hall and the Kinokinuya bookstore. With its wide array of options, this space has just about everything you need right in one location. Another longstanding attraction of C-ID is Kobe Terrace. This park was started as a tribute to Seattle's sister city, Kobe, Japan. Here, you'll find a community garden that's been active for over 50 years alongside landscaped gardens and walking paths. This garden offers a break from the hectic city whenever you need it. One of the best features of the Chinatown-International District is the ease of travel to all of Seattle. Sound Transit runs bus lines and the Link, a light rain system, throughout the city, both of which have stops in the neighborhood. The region's main artery for automobiles, Interstate 5, runs right through the heart of C-ID. Commutes to Downtown Seattle and the Central Business District are only around a 1 or 2-mile drive on city streets.
