Security-Widefield is a conveniently located alternative to the city
Situated on Colorado Springs’ southern outskirts, Security-Widefield offers a suburban atmosphere close to multiple major employers, including Fort Carson and Peterson Space Force Base. Many of the winding streets here provide views of the Rocky Mountains, and the homes that line them vary quite a bit in age and style. Still, housing prices in Security-Widefield are lower on average than in the city to the north. “I just love the wide variety of homes,” says Tina Swonger, who leads the Peak Success Team with Re/Max Properties, Inc. and has over 30 years of experience. “There’s something for everybody. If you want larger lots, if you want more open space, if you want more modern, with lower maintenance. You’ve pretty much got a wide selection to choose from, in a relatively small area.”
A mix of established and modern houses fill this suburb
Many of Security-Widefield’s homes were built across the mid-20th century and include examples of ranch and split-level colonial styles from that era. Prices start at $210,000 to $290,000 for a midcentury fixer-upper, while those that are move-in ready go for $295,000 to $480,000. More modern, Craftsman-style houses built around the turn of the 20th century are also abundant and priced from $389,000 to $560,000. Subdivisions like The Glen at Widefield and the Springs at Waterview have more recently built New Traditional-style homes ranging from $450,000 to $680,000. The new construction is helping to accommodate the region’s growing population, stoked by a job base that includes companies like Lockheed Martin and Amazon, in addition to Fort Carson and Peterson Space Force Base. “Because there is so much growth in Colorado Springs, the only place you can go is south and east,” Swonger says.
Widefield School District allows the flexibility of choice
Widefield School District 3 serves Security-Wakefield and maintains a B-minus grade on Niche. The district lets students and their families apply for schools outside of those in their zone, and zoned schools vary around Security-Widefield. However, a possible path includes Venetucci Elementary, Watson Junior High and Widefield High, which all have B-minus ratings. Venetucci offers a before- and after-school program with academic development and physical activity through the national Learning Edge organization. Watson has multiple STEM-based elective courses, including Automation and Robotics, and Flight and Space. STEM classes at Widefield High range from Aerospace Engineering to Cybersecurity. Security-Widefield is also home to the A-plus-rated Fountain Valley School, which covers grades 9 through 12. FVS has a STEM Scholars Diploma program in which students complete a senior capstone project on a topic of their choice.
Security-Widefield is surrounded by important roadways
This suburb’s homes sit between Interstate 25, CanAm Highway and Colorado State Highway 21. I-25 is a way to head north into downtown Colorado Springs, 10 miles away. CanAm Highway flows west toward the mountains, and Highway 21 is a route to the Colorado Springs Airport, about 4 miles outside Security-Widefield. The area also has multiple stops in the Mountain Metro Transit bus network.
From open prairies to mountains, outdoor options vary
The 646-acre Bluestem Prairie Open Space covers an eastern swath of Security-Widefield. Nine miles of trails cut through the prairie, and the space is popular for bird-watching. Cheyenne Mountain State Park, just west of Security-Widefield, stretches 2,701 acres along Cheyenne Mountain, which is part of the Rocky Mountains. The state park has 29 miles of trails and is a camping hot spot, with more than 60 campsites. Multiple neighborhood parks dot Security-Whitefield, too. Places like Pi-Ute Park and Windmill Mesa Park include playgrounds and pavilions. The Widefield Parks and Recreation Main Campus houses ball fields and the Widefield Community Center.
CanAm Highway is a nearby commercial thoroughfare
CanAm Highway traces along the western edge of this community and is a hub of stores and restaurants. Businesses along CanAm include Walmart Supercenter, and there’s a Big R department store just off CanAm, on Fountaine Boulevard. Tacos Del Gordo and Roll Up are a couple of restaurants in the area, and both are known for their breakfast burritos. The Local Table is another option, where the cheese curds are popular.
Movie nights, live productions and festivals are at close reach
Security-Widefield’s Pi-Ute Park hosts free Friday movie nights once a month from July to September. Heading into the city for more entertainment is relatively convenient, too. The 7,343-seat Broadmoor World Arena is 5 miles away and features weekly events, including musicals, concerts and comedy shows. Territory Days is a big annual event in Colorado Springs, a three-day free festival on Memorial Day weekend with live bands, food, a beer and wine garden and artisan vendors. “The quality of life and the opportunities and options that you have [in this area] — it’s not like you’ve got to drive two hours to get to cool stuff,” Swonger says.
