Life along the Skagit River in Northwest Washington
Spanning just under four square miles, Sedro-Woolley is a tiny city of about 13,000 people in western Skagit County. It sits at the edge of the Cascade Mountain Range, and along the Skagit River, making water activities like fishing and river floating easy to access. With PeaceHealth United General Hospital on the outskirts, health care is a major industry, as is construction. However, “most work somewhere else,” says Jim Skerjanc, resident and broker at HomeSmart One Realty. Residential streets are quiet, with grassy lots and chain-linked fencing. A handful of eateries and businesses are clustered near the center of town. “We have a few little restaurants; Joy’s Café has really good pancakes,” says Skerjanc.

Fishing and floating on the Skagit River
The Skagit River offers fertile fishing waters for salmon, steelhead and smelt. Locals can also float down the river in the summer. Riverfront Park has a boat ramp for river access, plus a baseball field, picnic tables and two playgrounds for different ages. Parts of Riverfront Park, State Route 20 and city blocks approaching the riverbank carry a flood risk. The weather is temperate year-round. “The climate is mild,” Skerjanc says. “We maybe get four to five days a year when it drops to 15 degrees.”

Downtown for local flavor; neighboring towns for most shopping
Downtown Sedro-Woolley has small businesses and local restaurants housed in buildings with their early 20th-century store names inscribed on their brick facades. Many are along Metcalf Street, which is lined with sidewalks and dotted with lamp posts under telephone wires. Between the antique shops and a decades-old, family-run 1950s diner, the past is celebrated here. There are a few grocers and larger retailers in Sedro-Woolley, “But most go to Mount Vernon and Burlington for everything,” Skerjanc says.

The case of the runaway elephant
When the circus came to Sedro-Woolley in May of 1922, neighbors had the shock of their lives when Tusko the elephant escaped. He went on a rampage, leaving giant footprints, peering into living rooms and uprooting trees. Men and boys downed moonshine and followed in his chaotic wake for over 30 miles and into the next morning before circus handlers finally reined the rogue elephant in – an incident recognized in the Sedro-Woolley Museum, along with other historical highlights. (No one was hurt and the circus reimbursed damages.)
Skagit County crime trends

Sedro-Woolley’s overall CAP Index crime score ranges between 3 and 4 out of 10, which is on par with the national figure.
