New subdivisions are opening in bucolic Wilmer
Catfish, camellias and an annual Cotton Festival. Yep, life is pretty bucolic in Wilmer, which is so far west of Mobile that it’s hugging the Mississippi state line. The neighborhood is thick with natural beauty, from sparkling Big Creek Lake to its plant nurseries, where azaleas and camellias thrive thanks to good soil and year-round warm weather. But change is afoot, with new subdivisions popping up across the countryscape and more folks moving into the Tanner Williams community at the southern fringe of the neighborhood. “It has grown so much in the last decade or so,” says Amy Tart, the office manager at Keevan's Green Thumb Nursery, Inc, which has been in business for about 30 years. Fortunately, the growth has not affected the vibe. “It’s peaceful and community oriented. Everybody knows everybody. Friendly.”
Tanner Williams Community Park is a hub for festivals
A former private campground beside the Escatawpa River, Escatawpa Hollow Park & Campground has been redeveloped as a public park. The campground, the riverside beach and a few walking trails are open while a café, general store, interpretive center and disc golf course are in the works. Tanner Williams Community Park is a family friendly park with a splash pad for kids, a baseball field and walking paths. There is also a covered picnic area with grills. Due to the discovery of Giant Salvinia, an invasive species, in 2021, Big Creek Lake was closed to fishing for a year. It has re-opened, but with numerous restrictions.
Homes in Wilmer are a mix of farms and new builds
Ranchers and farms dot the countryside but new subdivisions with Craftsman-style homes and modern farmhouses are bringing a touch of suburbia. Lots of new homes are going up in the Tanner Williams area. Despite the new construction, the growth doesn’t feel oppressive. “Lots of subdivisions are popping up, with enough space,” says Tart. “Houses aren't on top of each other.” Prices for single-family homes range from $97,000 for a two-bedroom bungalow on a wooded lot to $769,999 for a five-bedroom modern farmhouse with Craftsman features built in 2020. Manufactured homes are also for sale, with prices ranging from $19,000 for a fixer-upper to $159,900 for a three-bedroom home built in 2016.
The signature academy at Montgomery High is Biomedical Sciences
Wilmer Elementary regularly spotlights the achievements of its kids, from Good Citizenship Award winners to the budding philanthropists behind Paws for a Cause, on its Facebook page. The school earns a grade of C+ from Niche. Middle schoolers at Semmes Middle must follow the school dress code, which requires polo sports — in colors determined by class year — and khaki pants or shorts. Niche awards the school a C. Like other high schools in Mobile County, Montgomery High breaks its curriculum into themed academies that help students focus on distinct career paths. Montgomery has nine themed academies. Its signature academy is Biomedical Sciences. Montgomery earns a C+ from Niche.
Wilmer is convenient to Mobile and destinations in eastern Mississippi
Wilmer is 25 miles northwest of downtown Mobile via U.S. 98. The I-10 is also 25 miles south. Mobile International Airport is 30 miles away. Wilmer borders the Mississippi state line, so residents can easily commute to Mobile or various destinations in eastern Mississippi. A car is needed for day-to-day life and work.
Tanner Williams celebrates spring with a May Day Festival
Families gather at Tanner Williams Community Park in early May for the annual May Day Festival sponsored by the local historic society. Highlights include a May Pole Dance and the crowning of the May Queen and her court. The park hosts the Cotton Festival in early November, with a pie-baking contest and Cotton Queen Pageant.
Catfish with a side of Christmas decorations
Good food and good cheer are easy to find — at least on weekends. “In the last five years they opened a catfish house called Loaves and Fishes. It’s only open Thursday, Friday and Saturday,” says Tart. “It’s decorated for Christmas year-round. And it is packed to the max every day it is open. All-you-can-eat catfish.” Fast food restaurants hug U.S. 98 seven miles east of Wilmer in Semmes. Semmes is also home to the popular Hickory Pit Too, known for its down-home Southern cooking. Hamilton’s Produce in Wilmer sells fruits and vegetables. Winn-Dixie supermarket is located in Semmes.
