Sewickley Heights is an upscale, wooded borough in the suburbs of Pittsburgh. In the early 1900s, the community grew up as a pastoral retreat for prosperous city businessmen who spent their leisure time hiking and horseback riding over the rolling hills. Today, it’s known for its top-rated schools and abundant recreational opportunities, including parks and exclusive golf courses. While connected to downtown Pittsburgh by Interstate 279, the borough offers a quieter residential lifestyle. The CAP Index crime score is 1 out of 10, which is far lower than the national average of 4.

Hiking trails at Sewickley Borough Park
There is no shortage of outdoor recreation in Sewickley Heights. At the 1,000-acre Sewickley Heights Borough Park, miles of wooded trails provide space for hiking, biking and walking leashed dogs. There are several private golf courses nearby, including the Allegheny Country Club, which rests in the middle of the neighborhood. Most of the clubs require sponsorship by an existing member to join, however. The Sewickley Valley YMCA is along Blackburn Road, and it offers a variety of programs, including teen sports leagues, private swimming lessons and after-school care for children. The 33-acre Fern Hollow Nature Center organizes night hikes for adults and “drop & shop” programs where children go on supervised nature hikes at the center while their parents head into the city to run errands.

Million-dollar homes on acres of land
Paved roads wind around the community’s hilly terrain, leading past tree-lined private driveways. "It's very out of the way almost and has a sort of a rural feel to it, but not like farmland, that rural is like in the middle of the woods,” says Mark McClinchie, Realtor with Compass Realty, who has worked with clients in the community. “It's the nicest little town in all of the Pittsburgh area.” The median lot size is just over 5 acres, and some homeowners use the space to add private pools, horse barns and expansive outdoor living spaces. Styles vary, but buyers might find early-1900s, neo-classical-style brick estates with cobblestone driveways, French provincial-inspired homes from the mid-1900s or custom-designed residences built in recent years. Listings generally range from $2 million to $6 million.
