Shabbona provides small-town living west of Aurora

Shabbona is a small farming community offering rural reprieve 30 miles west of Aurora, Illinois’ second-most populated city. “People like living there because they feel like they are out in the country,” says Linda Swenson, a local Realtor with Century 21 Circle, who has lived in DeKalb County since 1969. “One of the biggest draws to the area over others in the county is that it is home to a beautiful state park.” Despite its secluded feel, nearby cities and abundant recreation are accessible.

Green spaces include play areas, athletic courts and a lake

Lions Park is centrally located and has shaded playsets, swings and a pavilion with picnic tables. Purdy Park includes a volleyball net and open green space for pick-up games. The city plans to expand the park in the coming years, with new amenities including a concert pavilion and multipurpose athletic courts. Shabbona Lake State Park, recently signed back to the Prairie Bend Potawatomi Nation, is situated on the village’s southern side. “It’s a place where you can really take in nature,” Swenson says. “It’s beautiful there, and you can rent a pontoon to go out and fish.” The park also has a public boat launch and a series of hiking paths. When Illinois’ cold winters roll in, these trails turn into snowmobiling and cross-country skiing routes, and holes are carved for ice fishing. The adjacent Indian Oaks Country Club offers a nine-hole course open to the public.

Vintage homes and farmland define the area's housing mix

Most homes in Shabbona rest along grid-like streets near the center of the community. These houses range from early 1900s American Foursquares and National Folk styles to midcentury ranch-style and split-level homes. Homebuyers will also find several New Traditional-style homes built over the last 25 years. Freight trains of the Canadian Pacific Kansas City railroad also pass through this central section. Swenson notes that most people living near the tracks consider it background noise. In the village's rural outer areas, expansive crop fields separate homes, barns are common, and plots can reach over 10 acres. Depending on size and condition, prices range from $190,000 to $250,000. Shabbona also has a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.

Residents dine locally downtown and shop big-box stores in Rochelle

A collection of independently owned restaurants dot Comanche Avenue, a stretch of U.S. Route 30. “They’ve done a lot to their downtown area,” Swenson says. “It looks cute and they have some good spots like the café.” Shabbona Café is the area’s go-to place for breakfast, serving homestyle dishes like country-fried steak and biscuits and gravy. Screamers Ice Cream is a favorite for sweet treats, but also offers a large menu of quick bites, including burgers and pulled pork sandwiches. Hueber Feed, which sells grain and other food for livestock, is also available along the stretch. Paw Paw Fresh Market, 10 miles southwest, covers essential groceries. Rochelle, 20 miles northwest, has an Aldi alongside big-box stores like Walmart Supercenter and Dollar Tree.
