Housing styles in Shaker Heights range through the decades, starting with early-1900s Tudor and Georgian Revivals. Homebuyers can also find Colonial Revivals and split-levels from the 1950s and 1960s, as well as some New Traditional homes built after 2000.
Homes typically cost more than the rest of the Cleveland Metro Area, including the neighboring University Heights. Moving to Shaker Heights means access to the top-rated Shaker Heights City School District, which is the first district in the greater Cleveland area to offer the International Baccalaureate Programme from preschool through 12th grade. “Shaker schools do a lot of critical thinking,” LeSueur says. “The kids are ready for the real world.” The district’s music department is also well-regarded, consistently receiving a Best Communities for Music Education designation from the National Association of Music Merchants. Private all-girl options, Laurel School and Hathaway Brown School, are also top-rated.

Commuters take the bus and light rail into Cleveland
Shaker Heights is commuter-friendly, with access to the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority’s bus stops and light rails. The Green and Blue lines stop at the Warrensville-Shaker Rapid Station, and LeSueur says commuters leave their cars in the lot and take the train into Cleveland. “You can get downtown easy-peasy, and then you have the bus lines that do different loops downtown,” LeSueur says. From the Shaker Square station, in the neighboring Buckeye-Shaker, you can reach downtown Cleveland in less than 15 minutes. The bus takes a little longer, about 45 minutes. If you are driving, expect a half-hour commute downtown during rush hour.
Shaker Heights, which has already been named an official Bicycle Friendly Community by The League of American Bicyclists, is introducing bike lanes and cycle tracks along major roads, such as Lee Road. There are about 200 miles of sidewalks throughout the city, making it extremely walkable.
Recreation includes public parks, a local library and nearby museums
Shaker Heights has plenty of opportunities to get outdoors, including:

The city also has a public library, which hosts events like book clubs and Storytime. Within 5 miles, or 15 minutes, you can be at University Circle which is home to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and the Cleveland Botanical Garden.

The Van Aken District Market is every Thursday from mid-June to mid-September, with vendors selling fresh produce and art.
