Shamong's peace and privacy with commuting access to Philadelphia
Shamong Township is located on the outskirts of the Philadelphia suburbs in South Jersey. While the Burlington County community is close enough to commute to the City of Brotherly Love, it’s far enough removed to provide homebuyers peace and quiet. “If you’re looking for land, most of the homes are in communities or off of streets where you actually have some property,” says sales associate and Realtor Misty Watson of the John Wuertz Team, whose family has deep roots in Shamong. Homebuyers appreciate the township's combination of privacy and accessibility, along with a well-regarded high school and landmark local businesses.

Ranch and colonial-style homes with larger lots
In comparison to neighboring towns closer to Philadelphia, Shamong takes on a more rural character. The landscape of the area includes forests, referred to as the New Jersey Pine Barrens, as well as the more agricultural scenery of the community’s developed side. Homes tend to sit on larger lots throughout the township, sometimes including room for stables. “You have a lot of owners and people out there who have horses,” Watson says. “It’s definitely known as a bit of a horse area.” Ranch-style and split-level homes sell for $300,000 to $600,000, while colonial-style houses sell for $600,000 to $850,000. Larger estates on acreage sell for $900,000 to $1.6 million. Shamong’s CAP Index Crime Score is 1 out of 10, lower than the national figure of 4.

Commutes to Philadelphia by car or by train from Hammonton
Philadelphia is approximately 30 miles from Shamong, and residents often commute toward the city for work. Residents almost exclusively drive, as the community has limited access to public transit. The New Jersey Turnpike is a little under 20 miles away, while Interstate 95 is just over 20 miles from Shamong. NJ Transit’s Atlantic City Line stops at Hammonton and leads to Philadelphia, where travelers can transfer to Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor. “If you need to get up to New York, it’s only a couple of exits away to take the train up,” Watson says. The closest emergency room is a 10-mile drive to the AtlantiCare Health Park in Hammonton. Philadelphia International Airport, 37 miles away, serves the area with commercial flights.
Recreation at Wharton State Forest's Atsion Recreation Area
Wharton State Forest, the New Jersey State Park System’s largest single plot of land, encompasses much of the southeastern portion of Shamong. The Atsion Recreation Area is the forest’s most notable attraction in Shamong, featuring swimming, canoeing and fishing in Atsion Lake alongside hiking and camping on the shore. The Indian Mills Athletic Association puts on youth sports programs at the Shamong Township Sports Complex, which has baseball, softball and soccer fields.

Community staples include Valenzano Winery and Pic-A-Lilli Inn
Shamong’s character is mainly rural. Several longstanding businesses sit along U.S. Highway 206. The Valenzano Family Winery was founded in 1996 and now offers wine tastings, as well as an on-site restaurant. The Pic-A-Lilli Inn has been operating since the 1920s, with the cozy family restaurant especially known for its wings. Other options are located in nearby towns, such as Medford and Hammonton. A ShopRite grocery store and a Walmart are situated in Hammonton.

Community events like the annual Shamong Day
The Indian Mills Historical Society meets monthly, helping to preserve the history of its namesake community and the larger Shamong Township area. Its largest event is Shamong Day, which features a car show, local craft vendors and live music. Community residents can also attend events put on by Burlington County, including the annual Winterfest, held 15 miles away at Historic Smithville Park.
