A small borough full of history and local pride

The borough of Sharpsville holds a lot of history and is home to 200-year-old houses, churches and mills. Proximity to outdoor recreation is a draw for residents, made easy with the Shenango River running along the northern end of the town and a massive park to the south. "It's also a great place to own a home and raise a family because of the top school system," says Borough of Sharpsville manager Ken Robertson. Locally owned restaurants, community events and a proud collection of neighbors make the small borough one where people will want to set down roots. "I've lived here my whole life. I've traveled a bit, but I always come home," Robertson says. "It will always be home."

Shopping and eating locally is the community’s focus

Despite its small size, Sharpsville has quite the local dining scene and aims to keep small businesses the focus through an intentional lack of chain restaurants and national retailers. "Sharon and Hermitage have the chain restaurants of the area. We're known for locally owned spots," Robertson says. Breakfast at Tiffany's Diner is among the most popular spots. Giant pancakes, breakfast bowls and specialty French toast options adorn the menu, while the décor and furniture painted Tiffany blue adorn the building. Muscarella's has served Sharpsville traditional Italian favorites for over 25 years. "I've run into people from Erie that came all the way down for the food at Muscarella's," Robertson says. Bakeries and sandwich shops are plentiful in the area, but for stocking up on groceries, D'Onofrio's Food Center is the go-to spot.

A top-notch park with endless amenities

With the Shenango River hugging Sharpsville's northern border, locals are often on the water boating or fishing. Adventurers looking to kayak can launch from the Sharpsville Area Recreation Park. Buhl Park is a 270-acre recreation area directly south of Sharpsville with fields, courts, disc golf and America's only free nine-hole golf course. "The surrounding towns refer to Buhl Park as 'our park.' It offers something for everyone," Robertson notes. "There's an annual basketball tournament, swimming, boating and summer concerts every weekend." The park is not only for the residents of Sharpsville and its neighboring towns. It brings in upwards of half a million visitors annually, wanting to take advantage of the stunning views and top-of-the-art amenities.

Easy dropoff with three schools sharing a campus

All three Sharpsville schools share a campus in the middle of the area, allowing many students to get there within a short walk. Given the one communal stop, dropoff for parents is a breeze. Sharpsville Area Elementary, Middle and High all receive a grade of B by Niche. The high school offers AP classes, SAT and ACT prep courses for those looking to further their education in college, and professional shadow programs for those who intend to go straight into their careers.

Houses from three centuries

Sharpsville's small population has remained under 5,000 for over 30 years and has gradually decreased since 1990, causing a slight lull in the housing market. Houses last around 90 days on the market, but with relatively low prices, ranging from $50,000 to $300,000, they make great investment pieces for those not wanting to break the bank. Buyers will find many late 19th and early 20th-century worker's cottages that need repairs. However, two-story farmhouses and Craftsman homes built within the last 20 years are around the quiet tree-lined streets. Several homes in Sharpsville date back to the borough's establishment in 1874, but growth during the middle of the 1900s added some architectural diversity, bringing ranches and Cape Cod designs.

Church events and the local art scene

Sharpsville locals enjoy gathering over shared beliefs and hobbies. Robertson notes, "There are several churches in the area. Each denomination of the church is here, and it's important in the lives of locals." The larger cities are close for those wanting a night or weekend away, but the borough has its own flavor and culture. Church festivals are popular, as are plays from local theater groups and the nearby symphony. Sharpsville is also celebrating the 150th anniversary of the established neighborhood this upcoming summer.

Getting around Shenango Valley

There are plenty of jobs in the area for those working in service, manufacturing and distribution, but Cleveland, Akron and Pittsburg are nearby for those who are okay with an hour-long commute. While most Sharpsville residents drive, the Shenango Valley Shuttle Service provides trips around the Shenango Valley. Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport is 30 minutes away, and small medical centers and hospitals can be found in Sharon.
