Quiet, mountainside living in Shawsville
The quiet, mountainside community of Shawsville offers private living, but nearby highways keep it connected to Christiansburg and Roanoke. The area is part of “Eastmont,” what locals call the far eastern edge of Montgomery County. Shawsville, alongside other Eastmont communities, was built in a valley between two Blue Ridge Mountain peaks. The region has long been supported by its agriculture, with Virginia Tech — formally called the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College when it opened in 1872 — playing a role in the county’s development. There isn’t any development happening in Eastmont today, but locals have access to newer shopping hubs in nearby cities.
Colonials and ranch-style homes starting in the $200,000s
Homebuyers can find colonials and ranch-style homes from the 1950s to the 1990s. Most houses sit closer together, though there are a few properties with up to 5-10 acres of land. Almost every home has a driveway, and many also come with attached or detached garages. Houses here typically sell for $200,000 to $350,000.
Specialized CTE courses at Eastern Montgomery High
Students may start at Eastern Montgomery Elementary, which gets a C-plus from Niche, before going to Shawsville Middle, which earns a B-minus. Eastern Montgomery High also receives a B-minus and has a career and technical education department with courses in fields like engineering, agriculture and medical sciences.
Access to Route 460, I-81
U.S. Route 460 runs 10 miles west to Christiansburg and 20 miles east to Roanoke. Residents can also take Interstate 81 around 60 miles north to Interstate 64 for regional travel. The LewisGale Hospital in Montgomery is 11 miles west. The closest airport, Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional, is 24 miles east.
Nearby sports facilities, hiking in the mountains
In the north end of Shawsville, Creeds Park offers baseball diamonds, a multi-use field and a playground. The Blacksburg Country Club has a private 18-hole golf course and tennis courts 10 miles north. The Blue Ridge Mountains that make up Montgomery County also feature over 150 miles of hiking trails.
Businesses along Route 460, more in Christiansburg
Along Route 460, there’s a Dollar General for essentials. Pizzana is a locally owned restaurant with pies and Italian entrees. Residents can also travel 10 miles south to Christiansburg for big box stores like Walmart. Uptown Christiansburg is a nearby shopping mall with 40 additional stores and eateries.
Eastmont Community Foundation events
The Eastmont Community Foundation hosts community gatherings throughout the year. The Tomato Festival is held in August at the Meadowbrook Center. There are contests for tomato art and tomato recipes, as well as a tomato pageant for the best tomato-themed outfit. The festival also offers food vendors, live music and family activities. The Oldtown Nights Concert Series is held from May to October at Old Town Fields. And Casino Night in January raises money for the foundation.
