Six miles west of Lake Michigan, Sheboygan Falls prides itself on a small-town way of life, with streets full of locally owned businesses and community-led events. "We have a strong history of cooperation," says city mayor Randy Meyer. "It's a culture of consistent, positive change." Residents are attracted to the city of fewer than 9,000 people for its renovated historic homes and a thriving job market that values the local economy. "When you get down to it, though," says Real Estate Property Shop broker Susan Erdmann. "It's a pretty little town with a beautiful main street."

Family businesses and historic homes
A thriving and eclectic manufacturing industry is the backbone of Sheboygan Falls' economy. "We make everything from croquet balls to orthodontic brackets," says Erdmann. Many local companies have called the city their home for generations, including Bemis Manufacturing, Johnsonville Sausage and Richardson Industries. "Some of our most important businesses are family-owned, which means when they expand, they expand into our community," says Mayor Meyer. "They're not going to shut their doors one day and leave the city."

Old-fashioned shopping downtown
Everyday shopping and groceries are available in the northern stretches of the city. Chain and locally owned restaurants are available—from the offbeat pub atmosphere of Fat Cow to the greasy spoon atmosphere of Falls Café. However, the city might be best known for its downtown specialty stores, which often feel like relics of an earlier time, including the old-fashioned cobbling of Depke Shoe Store and the inexplicable inventory at Evans Variety Store. "It's a standing joke in the community—if you can't find something, go to Evans," says Erdmann. "Ask for the most obscure thing, and they'll tell you what aisle it's on."

Parks with a view of the Sheboygan River
The falls that give the city its name are in Sheboygan Falls View Park downtown. The winding waters of River Park make it a popular venue for town events, including the Ducktona 500, a family-friendly event that culminates in a race down the Sheboygan River between countless rubber ducks. "They built a lagoon in it," says Mayor Meyer. "Many generations of kids grow up casting a line there and catching small pan fish."
