A neighborly town with local traditions

“The biggest appeal to Sheridan is that it is the opposite of Carmel or Noblesville,” says Susan Forrest, Realtor with United Real Estate Indianapolis. “Sheridan has a more small-town feel.” It conjures the image that immediately comes to mind when imagining a friendly American main street. “There are several churches and some schools. Folks know each other and get along,” says Jim Miller, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway, who also sells homes in the area. Those who live here in Hamilton County occupy a mix of houses that can date as far back as the mid-20th century. Sheridan also hosts several annual events and parties.

Mid-20th century homes

Modest craftsman bungalows and ranch-style homes line either side of roads just big enough to fit a passing car, perhaps a pickup. Here, a single-family home can cost about $250,000, and prices typically range between $270,000 to $350,000. A four-bedroom and 3 bath newly constructed home can go from the high $200,000s to the low $300,000s. On the higher end, a three-bedroom, two-bath ranch-style home sitting on 19 acres, with a barn and a couple of outbuildings, will cost $1.2 million. “It’s one of a few towns where homes still fit a homebuyer’s budget. And since it’s in the best county for real estate in the state, your values should improve over time,” Miller says.

The Sheridan Community School District

Sheridan students attend Sheridan Elementary School, Sheridan Middle School and Sheridan High School, each scoring a B on Niche. Sheridan High’s football coach, Larry “Bud” Wright, has won the most games of any high school head coach in Indiana, and Sheridan Community Schools earns an overall B-plus.

Commutes to Downtown Indinapolis

Out in these parts, “If you’re not driving, you’re walking,” Miller says. For those who commute, state routes 47 and 38 are the main roads in and out of town, with Indiana 38 being the quickest path to the next nearest town and Downtown Indianapolis.

Popular pizza on Sheridan's Main Street

Sheridan’s Main Street has some newer and family-owned restaurants. Greek’s Pizzeria is a popular dining destination and is part of Main Street’s revitalization effort. Twin Kiss Drive-In is another community staple, where diners enjoy the Jumbo Fried Tenderloin and hot fudge sundaes. But besides the local Dollar General, familiar retail favorites are not too common. Residents who want to shop at Target must travel to nearby Carmel, or they can drive about 15 minutes south to Westfield to find Walmart. While there, they can pick up groceries at Meijer, Fresh Market or Aldi.

Outdoorsy locals enjoy the Monon Trail

Locals enjoy getting outdoors at Biddle Memorial Park. Its playground features slides, a climbing apparatus and swings. Biddle also has a baseball field, basketball court, skatepark and picnic shelter. “It has beautiful oak trees,” Miller says. The Monon Trail is another option, running parallel to the park providing space to walk or cycle. Lastly, Veteran’s Park is smaller and is home to the Boxley Cabin, which was once where abolitionist George Boxley lived.

A few weeks later comes the Countdown to Christmas Bazaar, featuring handmade, home-baked and repurposed items for sale, plus breakfast, lunch and door prizes.
