Sherwood is a rural village on the shores of Lake Winnebago
Sherwood is a small town that sits at the edge of Lake Winnebago in northeast Wisconsin. With towering cliffs, a state park and pristine golf greens, residents live within walking distance of some of the area’s best-known outdoor destinations. And although the town is surrounded by rural farms and forests, it’s only a short drive to Appleton, Kimberly and Green Bay. “It’s a unique little town. We have these sprawling parks and amazing walking trails that give you panoramic views of the lake. That recreational lifestyle is what draws people here,” says Sherwood Village Administrator Padrick Dunn, who has been working in the town for the past year.
State parks, woodland trails and a local golf course
The town is best known for High Cliff State Park, an 1,100-acre park that stretches for several miles along the shores of Lake Winnebago. Hiking and biking trails climb through the forests and bluffs that overlook the water, offering stunning views of the surrounding scenery. Residents can launch their boats from the park’s marina, lounge on the beach or spend an evening at the campground. “The park brings so many people out to Sherwood. Last year, we had more than 700,000 visitors, and it was rated one of the best parks in the state,” Dunn says. Next door, golfers can tee up at High Cliff Golf and Event Center, an 18-hole, public course where the fairways wind between residential streets. Small community parks are also available in town, including Wanick Choute Park, Miller Pond, Legion Park and Sherwood Splash Pad.
Sherwood’s town center has a few shops and local restaurants
Sherwood has a town center with a handful of shops and restaurants, an auto shop and a church. The Granary Supper Club is a local favorite for downhome American cuisine, while The Outpost is a great spot to catch a game while wolfing down a burger and fries. There’s also Frogg’s Ice Cream for ice cream sundaes in the summer months. “It’s a small downtown, but the town has plans to expand with some new mixed-use buildings and new green spaces,” Dunn says. Dick’s Family Foods is the only grocery store in town — residents will need head to Appleton for major grocers and big box chains.
New homes and planned subdivisions with rural surroundings
Homes in Sherwood are largely part of planned subdivisions. Most were built over the past 30 years, although some older models also make an appearance. Traditional houses, ranch-style homes and Colonial Revivals are the most common designs, including many that have two- and three-car garages. Lot sizes are typically large, offering plenty of room of gardening, landscaping and hosting parties. Prices range from around $250,000 to $550,000 depending on their size and age.
Safety is also part of the appeal — The CAP Index Crime Score is 1 out of 10, lower when compared to the national average of 4.
Students attend highly rated public schools
Students can attend highly rated schools in the Kimberly Area School District. The first stop is Sunrise Elementary School, followed by Gerritts Middle School, which both get A ratings from Niche. The last four years are spent at Kimberly High School, which gets an A-minus. The high school offers an array of athletic programs, including teams that have recently competed for state championships. Those looking for an alternative that’s close to home might consider St. John Sacred Heart School, located in Sherwood. The school serves kindergarten through eighth grade and is unrated by Niche.
