Echo Lake
The history of Shoreline and Echo Lake Bathing Beach
Shoreline's location is within the ancestral lands of the Coast Salish Peoples, such as the Duwamish and Suquamish Tribes. In the early 1860s, development in northwest King County was propelled in part by homesteading. By the early 20th century, State Route 99 and the electric Seattle-Everett Interurban Railway increased access to the area, though the Interurban was discontinued in 1939.For much of the 20th century, Echo Lake Bathing Beach was a local attraction and leisure destination for visitors from Seattle and around the region. The Butzke family owned and operated it for over 50 years, adding more buildings and recreational features before selling it in the late 1960s. In the 1950s and 1960s, Edmonds School District bused in students for swimming lessons during the summer. There also was ice skating on the lake, though this is no longer the case as environmental conditions prevent it from freezing solid.
Echo Lake Park, Ballinger Park and the Interurban Trail
There's still a beach, but it's now part of Echo Lake Park. The park also has paved trails, picnic areas, and a playground. The Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife stocks the lake with rainbow trout. The lake is monitored for algae overgrowth, which can severely impact water quality, as it did in 2021 and 2024, causing temporary lake closures. It's just a few miles from Echo Lake Park to Lake Ballinger, which is popular for swimming, kayaking and fishing. Ballinger Park's 55 acres include a playground and sports fields. Along the west side of Ballinger Park is a section of the Interurban Trail, built in place of the old electric railway tracks. Shoreline's portion of the trail runs from North 205th Street to North 145th Street and includes north and south bike connectors.

Townhouses and condos, including 2020s construction, range from the mid-$200,000s to high-$800,000s.The Echo Lake Neighborhood Association (ELNA) holds regular meetings, often with speakers from the city, the county and local organizations.
