Parkwood
Expanding real estate and midcentury influence at lower prices than Seattle
With commerce on one end of Parkwood, most of the neighborhood is a shady downhill slope between the city and the northern suburbs. Residential streets are tightly packed, with smaller homes on lots of about 7,000 square feet on average. Parkwood features New Traditional, contemporary and ranch-style houses with midcentury influence. Single-family prices range from about $600,000 to $1.3 million for houses over 2,000 square feet. As development sweeps through the area, newly built townhouses are up for grabs in Parkwood and cost between $650,000 and $950,000. “It’s expanding, and we’re seeing that with the building of townhomes and apartments,” Peterson says. “People are moving north to escape the city because it’s a little more affordable.”Top-tier opportunities at Shoreline schools
Parkwood Elementary School is a landmark located in the heart of this neighborhood. Albert Einstein Middle School offers various extracurricular activities, music programs and an after-school bus for transportation. Shorewood High School has career-oriented classes and dual enrollment through the University of Washington. All three schools earn A grades from Niche. “The schools are great. I had an excellent education and made lifelong friends, which has kept me in the area,” Peterson says.Surrounded by Lake Washington and Puget Sound
With a community garden and a turf soccer field, Twin Ponds Park is a forested area with unpaved trails by two centerpiece ponds. Bitter Lake Reservoir Park features outdoor gym equipment and a P-Patch vegetable garden, part of a Seattle initiative for growing organic food in public spaces. Ridgecrest Park has an off-leash dog park and a distinctive playground with climbing equipment. Freshwater and saltwater beaches are on either side of Parkwood, as Lake Washington and the Puget Sound surround Shoreline. “We have great parks that feel like a forest just a quarter mile from your house,” says Kathe Trost, Realtor at Windermere Real Estate in Seattle. “I grew up here, and now it’s hard to be away from mountains and huge bodies of water.”Upscale restaurants on Aurora Avenue
Aurora Avenue is an active commercial thoroughfare with local eateries and vibrant pubs. With its dark-wood interior, Saltoro is an American restaurant serving Italian and brunch dishes with a signature side of truffle fries. Aurora Borealis is a well-lit bar with live music and an upscale atmosphere. There are also several Korean and Japanese restaurants within reach. Town & Country Market is the area’s primary supermarket on Westminster Way, while Asian Family Market is a massive grocery store with ethnic ingredients and vegan meat options.Light rail to Seattle and I-5 access
Parkwood is a car-dependent neighborhood with plenty of public transportation. Shoreline South Station offers access to the Sound Transit light rail, which takes passengers to Downtown. Interstate 5 also borders Parkwood, leading to city centers throughout the region. The King County Metro, Sound Transit and Community Transit are public bus systems serving the area. The Seattle-Tacoma International Airport is roughly 24 miles south for worldwide travel.
