Longmead Crossing
Suburban Neighborhood in Silver Spring, Maryland
Montgomery County 20906
The Longmead HOA provides pools and parks
Longmead Crossing was developed between the 1980s and ‘90s. New Traditional homes often sit on quarter-acre lots dotted with white oak trees. Single-family homes typically have two-car garages and four bedrooms. Prices tend to be higher than a Silver Spring’s average $540,000 selling price, with homes costing between $600,000 and $800,000. Colonial Revival-style townhouses also circle sidewalk-lined cul-de-sacs. Townhouses typically sell in the $400,000 to $500,000 range.Highly rated Montgomery County Public Schools
Kids can attend prekindergarten through second grade at Bel Pre Elementary School, which earns an A-minus by Niche, before going to B-plus-rated Strathmore Elementary School for third through fifth grade. They may continue to B-rated Argyle Middle School and B-minus-rated John F. Kennedy High School. The high school offers Academy Programs in broadcast journalism, healthcare professions, and business administration.Several golf courses nearby Longmead Crossing
“There are so many golf courses nearby, so it’s not common to live in Longmead Crossing and not play [golf] fairly frequently,” Sousa says. Argyle Country Club’s 18-hole golf course takes up Longmead Crossing’s southern area. Members can also use the pool, tennis courts and outdoor dining area behind the shingle-style clubhouse. East of the neighborhood, Northwest Golf Course is the longest course in Montgomery County. The public, 27-hole layout was designed by Ault & Clark in 1964. Though it stretches through a 55+ community, the 18-hole Leisure World Golf Club, west of Longmead Crossing, also offers memberships for non-residents. Rock Creek Regional Park is less than 7 miles west of the neighborhood. The 1,800-acre park surrounds two lakes: Lake Frank and Lake Needwood. Boat launches and shoreline fishing spots are available at both lakes. Anglers may catch blue gill or largemouth bass. Lake Needwood offers paddleboat and peddle boat rentals between May and October. Hardwood forests shade the park’s 13 miles of trailway that surround the lake and pass by other amenities, like the archery range or the Go Ape obstacle course.Reach D.C. by Layhill Road or the Glenmont Metro station
Though locals can walk to HOA amenities, Longmead Crossing is a car-dependent community. Layhill Road on the neighborhood’s eastern edge eventually connects to Maryland state Route 97, making D.C. a 15-mile drive south. Sousa warns that traffic often makes that drive take a while. “You can sit in rush hour traffic for like an hour or two, but that’s normal for D.C. suburbs.” Less than 3 miles south of the neighborhood, the Glenmont Metro station follows the Red Line, taking passengers to Union Station in about an hour. A few Montgomery County bus stops are also in the neighborhood. Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport is about 40 miles south, and Dulles International Airport is equidistant to the west. MedStar Montgomery Medical Center is the closest hospital, 6 miles north.Dining and shopping in downtown Wheaton
Aldi and CVS anchor Plaza del Mercardo, a yellow, Spanish-style shopping strip at the intersection of Bel Pre Road and Layhill Road. Walking under the terracotta-tiled awnings, shoppers can also pop into locally owned bakeries and florists. Though Starbucks and McDonald’s surround the shopping center’s parking lot, downtown Wheaton 4 miles south of the neighborhood has more restaurant options. Stained-glass lights hang over wood tables at Regina’s Restaurant, where Mediterranean food is served for lunch and Italian classics are served for dinner. The Westfield Wheaton mall, also in downtown Wheaton, has stores like Target, Macy’s and Dick’s Sporting Goods. The Longmead Crossing HOA provides pools and parks
The Longmead Crossing HOA has monthly dues. Townhouse owners pay about $25, while single-family homeowners pay $80. Any exterior changes to a house or yard must be approved by the association. Residents are only allowed to paint their homes in one of the HOA’s approved colors, which range from white to dark green. The group also maintains pocket parks and other community centers within the neighborhood. There are slides and a swing set at the woodchip-based park on Park Vista Drive. The neighborhood has two pools, both located on Longmead Crossing Drive. Blue umbrellas shade lounge chairs surrounding the smaller pool. A Greek Revival-style clubhouse sits in front of the larger lap lane swimming pool. Players whack tennis balls against the rubber courts next to the clubhouse, which locals can rent for events.
