A suburban community with rich railroad history

A water tower painted to look like a golf ball atop a tee greets the residents of Silvis, Illinois. This slice of what feels like small-town America is home to rows and rows of houses, grocery stores, leafy parks, public schools and a renowned public golf course that’s been rated among the best in the country. Located just east of East Moline, Silvis has about 8,000 residents. The city owes much of its early growth to a major railroad locomotive repair workshop that was built in the city in the early 20th century, and there are several parks and historic markers commemorating its rich, railroad heritage.

Shopping and dining close to home

There are plenty of shopping and dining options in Silvis. For lunch or dinner, Porkies is the place to be for juicy burgers, tenderloin and fries, while those in the mood for Italian might consider Frank’s Club Napoli Pizza. Cafe Lolita’s offers authentic Mexican fare, as does La Michoacana, a Mexican ice cream shop with colorful frozen treats. For groceries and everyday essentials, residents will find what they need at Hy-Vee, Jewel Osco, Aldi and Walmart.

Silvis' mix of home designs

The city offers a wide array of home styles from tiny bungalows and cottages to low-flung ranch-style dwellings. Split-levels and early 20th century styles like Craftsman homes and American Foursquares are also common here. There are new constructions available for those who prefer spacious, contemporary designs. “There’s a lot of new construction here, especially compared to Moline. I think that’s part of the appeal,” says Realtor Paula Firth of Ruhl & Ruhl Realtors, who has lived in the Quad Cities area for more than four decades. Streets are laid out in a traditional grid with plenty of mature trees, manicured front lawns and well-worn sidewalks that are perfect for an afternoon stroll. Lot sizes can range anywhere from 5,000 square feet to a half-acre, so residents will have plenty of room for growing a garden, landscaping with local flora or hosting a backyard party in the springtime. Home prices can range from as low as $100,000 for a small home in need of improvements to around $300,000 for larger, well-maintained and renovated homes.

Local parks and a PGA golf course

Schadt Park, Friendship Park and Phipps Prairie Park are tucked away on residential streets within walking distance of many homes. Schadt Park is the largest of three and offers athletic fields, tennis courts, a playground and grassy lawns shaded by trees. It’s a great place for locals to get outside and enjoy the sunshine. There’s also Railway Park, a small park and gazebo that pays homage to the city's origins with a bright-red railcar. Avid golfers can tee up at TPC Deere Run, a public golf course designed by former professional golfer D.A. Weibring. Its lush fairways and sleek greens sit along the shores of scenic Rock River. It’s been ranked among the best public courses in the nation and hosts the PGA Tour’s John Deer Classic every season. The city is also just a mile from Short Hills Country Club in East Moline, a members-only club with an 18-hole course and a club swimming pool.
