Island-style living along Inlet Shores

For residents of Inlet Shores in Riviera Beach, being on the water is more than a street address. “It’s an island style of living,” says Mariela Vega, lifetime resident and Realtor for Keller Williams Realty of the Palm Beaches. “The area is a hidden gem, but many developers are starting to discover it and are converting 1970s condos into new, resort-type ones. It has so much history and character.” Marinas and high-rise condos have claimed a good deal of the waterfront property, but there are a few homes with enviable views of the inlet. Neighborhood streets are met with green lawns, tall palms and mature sea grape trees.

Investing around Inlet Shores

Single-family ranch-style homes and high-rise condos overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway are plentiful within the neighborhood. Waterfront condos begin in the $300,000s and can run to just under $1 million for a three-bedroom unit. “Many people are buying them as investments due to the large number of condo developments in the works,” Vega says. Older houses set back from the water may list between $200,000 and $400,000; most are painted brick ranch-style from the 1960s. Prices take a steep hike as they get closer to the water. Anything within a block of the Intracoastal may near $1 million, and properties with waterfront access usually top $2 million.

Snorkeling and exploring Peanut Island

Nautical activities are the norm here, with everything from fishing charters to scuba diving alongside sharks. Bicentennial Park, which sits along the banks of the Intracoastal Waterway, offers aquatic adventures, including kayaking, jet-ski rentals and parasailing, plus a splash park for kids. Those who want to learn about and see manatees can visit the Manatee Lagoon, a free educational site that offers engaging, hands-on exhibits. Peanut Island is a popular spot for snorkeling, with octopus, parrotfish and starfish being just some of the sea life divers may encounter. Camping on the island is also possible. There is a ferry that runs to the island 365 days a year, and those who have boats can quickly venture over. “Every weekend, you can see hundreds of boats and jet skis next to Peanut Island,” Vega says. “It's a neat place to explore. When John F. Kennedy was president, they made a bunker for him under the island. It was open to the public as a museum for several years.” Locals can also walk or bike across the Jerry Thomas Memorial Bridge to Singer Island, stopping along the way to snorkel at Phil Foster Park.

Seafood Festivals abound in the Riviera Beach area

“The area has a lot of seafood festivals,” Vega says. “Everything here is about eating and drinking on the water. The Ocean Walk shopping mall has live music every day and festivals on weekends. On Riviera Beach, there is a fresh market on Sundays where farmers bring produce and food trucks come sell things like fried conch.” The Manatee Lagoon also hosts an annual ManateeFest with activities for kids, music and manatee-themed art for sale.

Easy access to Interstate 95 and the Palm Beach International Airport

Locals can take the ferry to Peanut Island 365 days a year (except when storms make the crossing unsafe); boats run every 25 minutes from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Environmental considerations

There is a Superfund site just 0.5 mile north of the neighborhood. It was formerly a manufacturing plant for circuit boards. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has performed remediation efforts and has determined that contamination on site does not pose a risk to those who live nearby. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) rates hurricanes and lightning as the highest environmental risks for Palm Beach County.
