Suburban homes near sought-after Wilson High School
About 5 miles outside of the heart of Reading, Springmont is a small, established suburb along the heavily traveled thoroughfare of Penn Avenue. “Springmont is now incorporated into the larger municipality of Spring Township, but it has a classic feel with traditional brick semi-detached and detached homes built anywhere between the 1920s and the 1960s,” says Matt Wolf, a Realtor with Re/Max of Reading who has sold homes in the area. Families flock to this neighborhood for its proximity to two schools in the Wilson School District, which Niche ranks as the No. 2 best school district in Berks County. Plus, a handful of local businesses, highway access and a well-regarded arts education center make Springmont a convenient hub for everyday life.

Ranch-style homes and Cape Cods, with some townhouses
This established neighborhood comprises early-20th-century single-family homes, with only a handful of duplexes, unlike many of the surrounding areas. Sidewalks line about half of the trees, shaded by tall sycamores and oaks. Small ranch-style homes and Cape Cods are among the most popular home styles here, as well as some larger Victorian and Dutch Colonials. Some homes are perched on lots of just 5,000 square feet, while others have room for more lavish landscaping on lots of about a third-acre. Most residents own their houses, which typically sell between $250,000 and $330,000.

Wilson schools within walking distance
Springmont is directly south of two schools in the Wilson School District: Whitfield Elementary and Wilson High. According to Wolf, walkability to both campuses is one of the neighborhood’s top selling points. “Wilson offers a rigorous academic program, as well as extracurriculars such athletics, music, theater, arts, clubs and dance,” he says. “The football and basketball games are also a big draw for area sports fans.” In 2024, the Wilson Bulldogs won the Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 1 Championship with a clean record of six wins to zero losses. Both Whitfield Elementary and Wilson West Middle score a B from Niche, while Wilson High earns an A-minus and is ranked as the No. 2 best public high school in Berks County. “Springmont is also home to the Yocum Institute for Arts Education, which provides for dance, music, theater and visual arts programming,” Wolf says. In addition to its youth and adult classes, the Yocum Institute hosts seasonal gallery exhibits and a jazz concert series.

School playgrounds and Red Caboose Park
Although Springmont doesn’t have any neighborhood parks, Wolf notes that many families utilize the Whitfield Elementary and Wilson High campuses for their walking paths, playgrounds and sports fields. Neighborhood playgrounds can be found to the east in West Lawn or to the south in West Wyomissing, including the one are Red Caboose Park. The park is particularly popular for its namesake train car where children love to play pretend, as well as the basketball and volleyball courts nearby. Directly adjacent to the park is Owls Field, where the amateur West Lawn baseball team plays. During baseball season, residents from across the surrounding neighborhoods gather at the diamond with their lawn chairs to watch the games.

Penn Avenue is a major thoroughfare where homes mingle with shops and restaurants. Plenty of the area’s businesses are longtime local favorites, including New York Bagelry, whose drive-thru is especially popular in the mornings. “Lilli’s Ranch House has also been a community staple for over 40 years,” Wolf says, “And people come from across Berks County to Adelphia Seafood, which is locally owned.” More local shopping and dining is 2 miles east in the popular retail district of West Reading, where boutiques and breweries line Penn Avenue. Supermarkets such as Giant and Target are to the north and south along U.S. Highway 222. Berkshire Mall is 2 miles northeast and is surrounded by even more retailers and chain restaurants.
