About Sioux Center, IA

Sioux Center's amenities and community culture

Beyond Sioux Center’s city limits, cornfields and farmlands stretch for miles and miles. Situated about halfway between Sioux City and Sioux Falls, the Sioux County city serves as a resource for the surrounding communities and towns, as well as its own citizens. Major amenities like the Walmart, the golf course and the university draw people to Sioux Center, while the local restaurants and symphony orchestra bolster a unique community culture that supports the city’s community.

Ranging housing styles across Sioux Center

Closer to downtown, homes are older, where Nationals and bungalows sit behind older trees planted in front yards and between the curb and the sidewalk. Fanning out from downtown, split levels and ranch-style homes are more common, along streets where streetlights rise over homes and trees grow right in front of front facades, dropping leaves into the lawns. Over by the golf course, New Traditionals have landscaped bushes in front of them and basketball hoops in the driveways. Sales are slower to come on the market in Sioux Center, so pricing information is limited, but the median housing price is about $340,000.

Public schools and private Christian educational institutions

For kindergarten through third grade, students head to Kinsey elementary School, before continuing to Sioux Center Intermediate School for fourth and fifth grades. Both schools receive B-minus ratings from Niche. Sioux Center Middle School and Sioux Center High School receive B ratings. While unrated by Niche, Sioux Center Christian School is an alternative kindergarten through eighth-grade option. It originally opened in 1903, making it the first permanent Christian school west of the Mississippi River. Sioux Center is also home to Dordt University, a private Christian institution that serves about 2,000 students. While it is a liberal arts college, its programs also include business administration, engineering, nursing and agriculture.

Nearby supermarkets and downtown dining staples

Sioux Center has two major supermarkets within the city limits — Walmart Supercenter and Hy-Vee. Centre Mall, true to its name, is also right in the center of town. Casey’s Bakery is located inside the mall, though it was located somewhere else when it first opened in the ‘40s. The bakery serves all kinds of baked goods but specializes in Dutch classics like stroopwafels and Dutch almond butter cake. In downtown, people can enjoy the homey and eclectic vibe at the Fruited Plain Café created by the rugs, mixed and matched furniture and pictures on the wall.

Parks, golf courses and trails throughout Sioux Center

All Seasons Center is Sioux Center’s main green space. It shares its athletic amenities like the football, soccer and baseball fields with the university, but they are also open to the public. In the summer, Siouxnami Waterpark offers a pool, lazy river and slides. The Recreation Trail runs 6 miles through Sioux Center, offering bikers and pedestrians a path from the university to Children’s Park, where there’s a playground and disc golf course. The Ridge Golf Club is a full course open to the public that is hoping to open a shorter, 9-hole course in the summer of 2025.

Getting around Sioux Center and essential amenities

Other than the bike trail, Sioux Center residents will need a car to get around the city. U.S. Highway 75 cuts down the center of the city, though locals know it better as Main Street. Sioux Center Health is in the city limits, so residents don’t have to leave town for medical care. When traveling, people can catch flights at Sioux Gateway Airport, about 54 miles south, where United Airlines offers nonstop flights to major cities like Chicago and Denver.

Seasonal orchestra concerts and summer festivals

Sioux Center is the seat of the Northwest Iowa Symphony Orchestra, which comprises of community members and college students and performs four times a year. Every early June, the Summer Celebration brings the community together for a cookout, pickleball tournaments, carnival games, markets in the street and live music.
