Amenities, culture and a symphony orchestra in Sioux Center
Cornfields and farmland stretch for miles beyond the city limits of Sioux Center. About halfway between Sioux City and Sioux Falls, the small city of about 8,000 serves as a hub for the surrounding communities and towns in Sioux County. Walmart, a golf course and Dordt University draw people to Sioux Center, while its local restaurants and symphony orchestra bolster the community culture.
Ranging housing styles across Sioux Center
Near downtown, older Nationals and bungalows sit behind trees and front yards next to curbs and sidewalks. Fanning out from downtown, split-levels and ranch-style homes are more common, many on streets with tall trees and streetlights. Over by the Ridge Golf Club, New Traditionals sit on lots with landscaped bushes and basketball hoops in the driveway. Recent sales in Sioux Center are rare, so pricing information is limited, but the median housing price is about $340,000.
Public schools and Dordt University, a private Christian institution
Students head to Kinsey Elementary School for kindergarten through third grade before continuing to Sioux Center Intermediate School for fourth and fifth grade. Both schools receive a B-minus from Niche. Sioux Center Middle School and Sioux Center High School both receive a B. Sioux Center Christian School, currently unrated, is another local option for kindergarten through eighth grade. First opened in 1903, it is the oldest permanent Christian school west of the Mississippi.
Sioux Center is also home to Dordt University, a private Christian institution that serves about 2,000 students. The liberal arts college also offers programs in business administration, engineering, nursing and agriculture.
Nearby supermarkets and downtown dining staples
Sioux Center has a Walmart Supercenter and a Hy-Vee within city limits. Centre Mall — true to its name, right in the center of town — is home to Casey’s Bakery, which serves all kinds of baked goods but specializes in Dutch classics like stroopwafels and almond butter cake. Downtown, the Fruited Plain Café has an eclectic vibe with mixed-and-matched furniture, rugs, and pictures on the wall.
Parks, golf courses and trails throughout Sioux Center
All Seasons Center, Sioux Center’s main green space, shares its athletic fields with the university but remains open to the public. In the summer, Siouxnami Waterpark offers a pool, a lazy river and slides. The Recreation Trail runs 6 miles through Sioux Center, offering bikers and pedestrians a path from the university to Children’s Park, where there’s a playground and disc golf course. The Ridge Golf Club is open to the public, with plans to add a shorter, nine-hole course in the near future.
Getting around Sioux Center and essential amenities
U.S. Highway 75, aka Main Street, cuts through the center of town. Other than the bike trail, Sioux Center residents need a car to get around. Sioux Center Health is within city limits, so residents don’t have to leave town for medical care. Sioux Gateway Airport, about 50 miles south, has nonstop flights to major cities like Chicago and Denver.
Seasonal orchestra concerts and summer festivals
Sioux Center is home to the Northwest Iowa Symphony Orchestra, a combination of community members and college students that performs four times a year. Every June, the Summer Celebration brings the community together for a cookout, pickleball tournaments, carnival games, markets in the street and live music.
