In southwest Sioux Falls, everybody knows your name
Galway Park is a quiet suburban neighborhood in southwest Sioux Falls, 3 miles from Interstate 229, which connects to downtown. Though built in the early 2000s, this area has only become coveted recently. For a long time, west Sioux Falls was underdeveloped, containing residential neighborhoods but no significant commercial development or infrastructure connecting it to the rest of the city. Local Realtor Michael Gross pinpoints a time 10 years ago when the tide began to turn, and moving to the west side became trendy. A popular restaurant called Shenanigans relocated from The Empire Mall to west Sioux Falls and quickly became a popular gathering place for the community. "That, in my opinion, spurred quite a bit of the growth on that side of town,” Gross says. “If you think of the west side, you think of Shenanigans." He says its “small-town South Dakota feel” isn’t exclusive to the establishment but representative of the community’s culture. "We're pretty laidback people,” he says. “We like to have firepits in our driveways and drink beer. Every now and then, we get classy and break out the wine."

Bang for your buck on Sioux Falls's west side
Galway Park has new traditional homes with vinyl siding painted in different colors and brick and stone accents. Driveways extending from multicar front-facing garages divide neatly mowed lawns, and sidewalks, mailboxes and occasional trees line the neighborhood's streets. "You'll see some nice homes in that area," says Re/Max Broker Dick Hahn. "Most homes there aren't older than 20 to 25 years old. Most were probably built in the early to mid-2000s. The homes are well kept, and most are in the $300,000 to $500,000 range." Gross elaborates, "It's probably about $20,000 cheaper on the west side than the east side. You get a lot better bang for your buck, in my opinion."

Getting around from southwest Sioux Falls
Compared to the east side of Sioux Falls, the west side still lacks significant infrastructure connecting it to the city center. "It's out quite a ways," Gross says. For some, this can be a perk, with less congestion and the feeling that the area is only inhabited by its residents, though others might prefer to live somewhere with better access to downtown. Galway Park is 3 miles from I-229, which residents can take to downtown in about 20 minutes. The neighborhood's sidewalks make it possible for many to walk to the park, but other than that, it's an entirely car-dependent area with no bus stops.

Hanging out at Shenanigans and shopping at The Empire Mall
Galway Park is 2 miles from 41st Street, where residents can pick up coffee from Scooter’s, groceries from Fareway and take-and-bake pizzas from Papa Murphy’s, and 3 ½ miles from The Empire Mall. This is Sioux Falls’s biggest shopping destination, home to over 140 stores including major retailers like Dillard’s and Macy’s, as well as a food court and some sit-down restaurants. Where residents go to socialize, though, is Shenanigans, which is 3 miles or a seven-minute drive from the neighborhood. "It's like your little hometown pub," Gross says. "It’s like ‘Cheers’ - everybody knows your name. You walk in and think it's a bar, and then there's kids running around. There's a bar in the middle, a nice big fireplace and games. It's just a laidback, cool place." He also adds that they have private rooms available for parties, a frequent choice for celebrating special occasions in southwest Sioux Falls.

Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation's Supervised Playground Program
Since 1944, Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation has offered the Supervised Playground Program, where kids ages seven to 12 can be dropped off at a park on summer weekday afternoons for an hour and a half of screen-free socialization. Galway Park is one of the sites for this program, offered from 3:30 to 5 p.m. every Monday through Friday in June and July. Children 6 and under are welcome to join with the supervision of someone 16 or older. Southwest Sioux Falls tends to take a "village" approach to child-rearing, finding ways to let kids play with each other while parents socialize. "When the kids go out trick or treating, all the parents hang out in the driveway and ask each other, 'Which beer are you drinking? Do you want to trade?'" Gross says. "That's how we do things around here. We're all very laidback."
Galway Park has a small playground for the kids.
