A residential neighborhood between Sherman Park and Sanford USD Medical Center
Two miles west of downtown Sioux Falls, Garfield is a primarily residential area with a mix of apartments and single-family housing options. Home prices in Garfield are lower than the average for the city, which makes it a good entry point for first-time buyers. The community's location also plays a role in its popularity. “The nice thing about Garfield is that it’s right by Sherman Park, which is a huge park with a bunch of softball fields,” says local Realtor Andy Kontz. The park is also home to the 45-acre Great Plains Zoo and offers multiple access points to the 36-mile Sioux Falls Recreation Trail. Residents of Garfield are also only a mile from Sanford USD Medical Center, one of the state’s top employers, which makes this community ideal for many of its 4,000 employees and their families.

Cape Cods, bungalows and ranch-style homes
According to Kontz, most homes in this neighborhood were built between the 1940s and 1980s. Housing styles here consist primarily of modest Cape Cods, bungalows and ranch-style homes which feature vinyl, shingle or stucco siding and usually don’t exceed 1,500 square feet. While the majority of homes maintain a similar size, they're not cookie-cutter. Roofs vary from front-gabled to side-gabled to hipped, and exterior colors, though mostly neutral tones, can vary too. The neighborhood’s 5,000- to 10,000-square foot lots typically include cozy front- and back-yard spaces, and sidewalks along the streets make going on walks a breeze. Home values in Garfield tend to fall between $200,000 and $300,000.

Neighborhood dining options and nearby groceries
Locals can kick-start their mornings with a coffee from Caribou or Scooter’s on 12th Street – where they’ll either drive-thru or hang out inside to get some work done. For lunch, they might grab tacos from Jacky’s Burrito Express or dine in at Golden Harvest, a Chinese restaurant across 12th Street. Weeknight dinners and weekend brunches are best enjoyed at Fryn’ Pan Family Restaurant, a 24-hour diner that’s all about balance with both a salad bar and massive milkshakes. The neighborhood’s La Michoacana gives residents easy access to Mexican groceries, and the nearby Juba Restaurant & Grocery Store is where locals go for halal meats. A neighborhood convenience store and Walgreens provide access to snacks, sodas and prescription pickups, but for most groceries, locals will shop at the Sioux Falls Food Co+op, Sunshine Foods or ALDI.

Events for kids and adults alike at the Great Plains Zoo
“The zoo is constantly hosting events for kids and families,” says Assistant Director of Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation Brett Kollars. On summer Wednesdays, the zoo’s open for two extra hours for Wild Wednesdays, and each week has a unique activity, like magic shows, aerial performances and guided birding walks. Each February, couples over 21 can spice up their Valentine’s Day with “Woo at the Zoo,” an educational evening that’s all about animal mating. In the spring, kids fill the zoo for the annual Egg-stravaganza, an Easter celebration with egg hunts sectioned off by age range.
