Named for the Three Sisters mountain range 12 miles away, Sisters is a small city of around 3,000 people. Well-known for its bucolic surroundings and mild weather, the area attracts tourists from all over the state. “It’s got 300 days of sunshine and mountain views,” says Thomas Arends of the Arends Realty Group. “Other parts of Oregon can be really wet and rainy, but it’s much drier here.” The community looks for any opportunity to come together, leading to various annual events and celebrations.

Homes are neatly laid out on small lots, frequently less than a tenth of an acre. Ponderosa Pines are a constant piece of the landscape, shading streets and driveways. Hikers can challenge themselves in the Three Sisters

The woods surrounding Sisters make it a popular area for overnight campers, who can take advantage of several campgrounds, including the Creekside Campground and Sisters RV Park. Hikers frequently take the trek to the Three Sisters mountain range to challenge themselves on a nearly 50-mile loop that includes mountains, lakes and an elevation of 7,000 feet. Birders and other nature lovers head to Camp Polk Meadow Preserve to see owls, otters, elk and several native species of plant life. Aspen Lakes Golf Course is a public golf course with views of the surrounding mountains and forests alongside its fairways. Gardeners and amateur horticulturists can claim a plot at the Sisters Community Garden.

Locals and tourists come together for the Sisters Harvest Faire

The second week of October ushers in the Sisters Harvest Faire, welcoming upwards of 10,000 visitors to purchase the wares of hundreds of food and art vendors. Mountain bikers head to the area in May for the Sisters Stampede, a mountain biking race with a cash purse and awards in dozens of categories. September brings the Sisters Folk Festival, highlighting folk, bluegrass and Americana-style musicians since 1995.

Retail and restaurants surround Cascade Avenue

Most shopping is in the city's center, with various locally owned stores and restaurants around Cascade Avenue. Ray's Food Place is less than a mile away. Fika Sisters Coffeehouse prides itself on having warm, friendly surroundings to pair with a menu of coffees, teas and gourmet pastries. Opened in 1912, the Sisters Saloon and Ranch Grill puts a modern spin on old-fashioned Western-style cooking with locally-sourced produce and beef.

With a downtown of false front buildings and saloon-inspired businesses, Sisters wears its western past on its sleeve. “It’s an old western town,” says Arends. “They’ve tried to keep the integrity of that vibe.”

Sisters High School has unique classes and coursework

Students begin at Sisters Elementary School before attending Sisters Middle, both of which have an A-minus from Niche. Sisters High School has a B-plus and offers unique coursework, including flight science, guitar building and Mandarin Chinese.

U.S. Route 20 is a straight shot to Bend

U.S. Route 20 is one of the area's main highways, providing a direct route to Bend, about half an hour's drive away. Cascade East Transit provides a public bus option with several stops along East Main Avenue.

Sisters is at risk for wildfires and low air quality

According to First Street, Sisters has worse air quality than 96% of Oregon cities. First Street also lists the city as severely at risk of wildfires in the next 30 years.
