Sisters is a city of clear weather and mountain views

Named for the Three Sisters mountain range 12 miles away, Sisters is a small city of around 3,000 people. Well-known for its bucolic surroundings and mild weather, the area attracts tourists from all over the state. “It’s got 300 days of sunshine and mountain views,” says Thomas Arends of the Arends Realty Group. “Other parts of Oregon can be really wet and rainy, but it’s much drier here.” The community looks for any opportunity to come together, leading to various annual events and celebrations.

Area homes are influenced by Northwest Regional styles

Homes are neatly laid out on small lots, frequently less than a tenth of an acre. Ponderosa Pines are a constant piece of the landscape, shading streets and driveways. Designs are often influenced by the Northwest Regional style, with lots of exposed, rustic wood. Townhouses are popular, with price points that range from the mid-$400,000s to the high $700,000s, depending on size, location and modern amenities. Craftsman homes start in the high $500,000s and peak in the mid-$700,000s. Many of the largest homes are modern takes on prairie and farmhouse styles, selling between the low $800,000s and $1.5 million.

Hikers can challenge themselves in the Three Sisters

The woods surrounding Sisters make it a popular area for overnight campers, who can take advantage of several campgrounds, including the Creekside Campground and Sisters RV Park. Hikers frequently take the trek to the Three Sisters mountain range to challenge themselves on a nearly 50-mile loop that includes mountains, lakes and an elevation of 7,000 feet. Birders and other nature lovers head to Camp Polk Meadow Preserve to see owls, otters, elk and several native species of plant life. Aspen Lakes Golf Course is a public golf course with views of the surrounding mountains and forests alongside its fairways. Gardeners and amateur horticulturists can claim a plot at the Sisters Community Garden.

Retail and restaurants surround Cascade Avenue

Most shopping is in the city's center, with various locally owned stores and restaurants around Cascade Avenue. Ray's Food Place is less than a mile away. Fika Sisters Coffeehouse prides itself on having warm, friendly surroundings to pair with a menu of coffees, teas and gourmet pastries. Opened in 1912, the Sisters Saloon and Ranch Grill puts a modern spin on old-fashioned Western-style cooking with locally-sourced produce and beef.

With a downtown of false front buildings and saloon-inspired businesses, Sisters wears its western past on its sleeve. “It’s an old western town,” says Arends. “They’ve tried to keep the integrity of that vibe.”
