Dogs and kids run free in Six Mile
Once home to the Cherokee Nation, Six Mile began its history as a town in the 1800s. The downtown previously consisted of only a church and post office, so the community has grown considerably over the years. Still, it retains its rural atmosphere in the process. “It’s country living with larger lots and small subdivisions. It’s a place where you can let dogs out and kids play—the things you might not find in a larger type of city or subdivision,” explains Donna Cantrell of Cantrell & Associates, an agent with home sales in multiple Six Mile subdivisions.
Cabins on Lake Keowee and properties near Main Street
Residents get to decide between two ways of life: small-town charm in the heart of Six Mile and waterfront living along the neighborhood’s western border. Small streets branching off Mount Olivet Road feature mobile homes and cottages on at least an acre of land, while houses off Walhalla Highway feature log cabin-style architecture with views of Lake Keowee. Though there are homeowners associations like Harbor View and Chastain Ridge, much of the community remains unrestricted and well cared for. “The locals have a lot of pride in their properties, and they prefer to keep the town smaller. They don’t want it to grow that much—just enough for a little convenience as far as running out and getting bread and milk,” Cantrell says. Four-bedroom mobile homes start at around $170,000, and three-bedroom bungalows begin at nearly $190,000. On average, home sales for turnkey homes with three to four bedrooms stay between $250,000 and $400,000. Larger homes with in-ground pools and multi-acre lots fall outside the standard range and make up a small portion of the community, with prices from $500,000 to $800,000.

Shopping and dining options in Six Mile remain sparse despite the increase in population over the last decade; however, there are a few businesses for residents to visit before they need to venture into Pickens. For shopping, Dollar General covers the basics with a frozen food section and a small grocery aisle. In the morning, Red White & Brew Coffee Co. caffeinates the community, and for lunch and dinner, Los Poblanos and Out to Eat offer Mexican and American cuisine options about a block from the coffee shop.
