Country living meets Civil War history in Bentonville

Bentonville offers secluded country living in a historic stretch of Johnston County. The community, on the outskirts of Four Oaks, is where the Battle of Bentonville, the last major battle of the Civil War, took place in 1865. Today, the Bentonville Battlefield is a state historic site offering tours and events. “People who buy there, they fall in love with the countryside, the friendly neighbors and the pride that comes with living near a historic site,” says DeAnna Carlson, a Realtor with the Marti Hampton team at eXp Realty. She adds that retirees often move to the enclave in search of peace and relaxation. “People want to get out of the hustle of the city and just lie back and ride their horses.”

Single-family homes on large lots in the Johnston County countryside

Battlefields, farms and pine forests surround Bentonville’s single-family homes, which rest along a network of rural two-lane roads. These ranch-style homes, bungalows, farmhouses and manufactured homes sit back from the street on spacious lots with enough room for detached sheds, gardens and workshops. Mature trees shade gravel driveways that sometimes lead into carports and garages. Prices range from around $130,000 to around $300,000. Potential buyers should note that some properties back up to wetlands and creeks, which pose a flood risk.

Johnston County Public Schools offers school choice

Johnston County Public Schools earns a B-plus overall rating from Niche. The district of more than 37,000 students and 48 schools offers school choice through magnet-style programs, early college options and specialized academies. Placement is based on capacity and sometimes on lotteries. Most Bentonville homes are zoned for the B-rated Four Oaks Elementary, the B-rated Four Oaks Middle and the C-plus-rated South Johnston High, which is home to IDEAL Academy (Initiative to Develop Environmental and Agricultural Leaders).

Trails and an environmental learning center offer recreation

At the Bentonville Battlefield State Historic Site, history buffs and nature lovers can hike along 6 miles of trails that pass through fields and heavily wooded trenches where soldiers once fought. Nearby, Johnston Community College’s Howell Woods Environmental Learning Center offers more outdoor adventures from mountain biking and horseback riding to camping, hunting and fishing on a property stretching 2,800 acres. It has a canoe launch along the Neuse River as well as an educational center that organizes seasonal events and owl safaris. Four Oaks offers some of the closest playgrounds and ballfields, less than 15 miles from Bentonville.

A variety of shops and restaurants are within 20 miles

Bentonville residents usually drive into nearby towns and cities to shop and dine, as there’s little retail within the township. A little over 15 miles away, Smithfield offers boutique and outlet shopping, national retailers and locally owned restaurants and coffee shops, such as The Chicken Barn and The Gilded Pear. It’s also home to the closest full-service hospital, UNC Health Johnston. Goldsboro has more shopping and dining options about 20 miles away. Food Lion is the closest grocery store, about 10 miles south of Bentonville in Newton Grove.

Seasonal events at the Harper House and other historic sites

History is often at the center of community events here. In November, the Fall Festival at Bentonville Battlefield invites families to the historic site for trades demonstrations, wagon rides, crafts, kids’ activities and live music. Then in December, the Harper House, a family home used as a hospital during the Battle of Bentonville, is decked-out in Civil War-era holiday decorations for In Heavenly Peace: Bentonville Christmas Open House. Visitors can tour the home, enjoy 19th-century refreshments and listen to holiday tunes around a campfire.

Bentonville is car dependent

Bentonville has no public transportation, so most people drive to get around. Several major highways are within 20 miles, including Interstates 40, 42 and 95. The capital city of Raleigh is about 50 miles away and Fayetteville is around 45 miles away. Both cities offer commercial airports.
