From the capital to the country

Smithfield is a suburb of Providence that feels remote. With reservoirs, rivers and large parks, the neighborhood has a wooded, country feel that separates it from the surrounding metropolitan area. Home to Bryant University, buyers can find houses in subdivisions with wide, walkable streets, only about 20 minutes from the state’s capital.

Homes among the hills

Dense woods and gentle hills define the streetscape in Smithfield. According to Ken Scotti, a broker associate with Re/Max Properties with 22 years of experience selling in the area, “West of Interstate 295, it’s more rural, and homes are spread out. To the east, properties are on smaller lots and closer to each other.” In the $300,000 to $400,000 range, find a three-bedroom ranch-style or Cape Cod property. For $500,000 to $700,000, buyers can expect four-bedroom Colonial-Revival or four-square homes with modern interiors on half an acre or more. These properties might back up to Capron or Georgiaville Pond, giving some residents waterfront access.

Stillwater, skating and scenery

The Stillwater Scenic Walkway is a short hike that follows an old railroad and passes through dense forest. Along the shore of Capron Pond and Stillwater Pond, the trail provides access to Stillwater Reservoir. The reservoir is a popular spot for paddle sports, birding and hiking that welcomes dogs off-leash in some areas. The Smithfield Municipal Ice Rink rents their facility to various youth, high school and adult figure skating and ice hockey clubs and offers public skating at select times during the week. Wander a wooden walkway at Esmond Park Conservation Area, which spans 4 acres. This quiet green space is a great place for a quiet, scenic walk along the cattail marshes of the Woonasquatucket River.

A community coming to fruition

"In the fall, Smithfield residents love apple picking,” says Scotti. “There are tons of farms for it.” One option is Steere Orchard on Austin Avenue, which offers apple picking from August to October and peach picking in August and September. The orchard also has a farm stand, selling apples, pumpkins, baked goods and more. During the holiday season, the town hosts their annual All Lit Up Christmas parade, where festive floats and walkers travel from Smithfield High School to the Village Green to light the Christmas tree.
