About Snohomish, WA

About Snohomish, WA

A small, historic riverside city southeast of Everett

Snohomish, a small city in a county by the same name, was incorporated in 1890. It has a population of about 10,200 and is known for its historic downtown beside the Snohomish River. The name Snohomish comes from an indigenous tribe of Southern Coast Salish peoples. Snohomish has an agricultural legacy; its surroundings are rural, with farms and open spaces. Everett, a city on the Puget Sound about 9 miles to the northwest, is a big commuter location with The Boeing Company, Providence Regional Medical Center and the Naval Station Everett. For commuters to Seattle, the trip is about 32 miles southwest. Snohomish has seen recent growth as more move to the area to take advantage of its convenient commutes and combination of city and rural amenities. "As opposed to the typical urban sprawl, Snohomish is laden with yuppie services, antiques, bike paths and upgraded delicatessens and restaurants," says Skip Bates, a broker with New Horizons Realty.

A historic district downtown, chain stores to the northwest

Over the decades, redevelopment has brought upgrades to the city, including improvements to the downtown area, which now draws tourists in addition to locals. The Snohomish Historic District downtown is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This commercial and residential area is known for its riverside setting. There's a riverfront trail, boutiques, antique stores and a variety of restaurants. " It's quiet and easygoing and kind of feels like the '50s and '60s. Everything is family owned, there aren't big chain businesses there," says Neil Northrop, an Everett native. The northwest part of the city is a place to go for well-known brands. Everett Mall, about 9 miles away, is a retail destination with over 100 stores.

One popular part of the festival is the Balloon Glow, showcasing hot-air balloons at dusk at Harvey Airfield. Events held in the historic downtown include Winterfest, Snohomish Pride in June and August's Snohomish Block Party, a street fair with an artisan market and music. Community Transit services, major roads and airports

Major roads include U.S. Route 2 and state Route 9, which intersect north of central Snohomish. Traffic can be an issue on SR-9 and other roads. The Providence Snohomish Clinic and Optum are some of the closest medical facilities. Community Transit buses serve the area; a commuter route to the City of Monroe and downtown Seattle is available. The Snohomish Park & Ride is one spot to catch the bus. Paratransit and vanpool services are also offered. Harvey Airfield is a general aviation facility, whereas regular passenger flights take off from Seattle Paine Field International Airport, also called Paine Field and Snohomish County Airport. The airport, about 13 miles from Snohomish, is a hub for Alaska Airlines, serving West Coast destinations. Flight-related noise is an issue people moving to Snohomish should be aware of, though it's less of a concern in northern Snohomish. Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, known as Sea-Tac, is about 40 miles to the south.

Snohomish River flooding risks, crime data for the city

Snohomish is cooler and wetter than areas of the state east of the Cascade Mountains. There are seasonal variations, including occasional river flooding in the winter. Downtown has dikes in place, and the county operates a flood information center and an emergency notification system. FBI data shows the city's reported violent crime rate is slightly higher than the state number, though lower than nationwide. The property crime rate is somewhat below the national number but significantly lower than statewide.
