Tiny Somerset has big appeal

The tiny neighborhood of Somerset is a high-end locale inside another high-end locale in Chevy Chase, a broader DC suburb straddling the border between the District and Maryland. Known for its park-like setting, the neighborhood dates to 1890, when five Department of Agriculture scientists purchased 50 acres of farmland to set up a residential community. Located comfortably inside the Beltway and just blocks away from the Friendship Heights Metro, traversing the metro area via the Red Line is simple. “There are so many perks in Somerset,” says Lauren Davis of TTR Sotheby’s International Realty. “There are great schools, there are sidewalks everywhere, snow removal in the winter is complimentary, and there are neighborhood tennis courts and a pool.”

Classic colonials, ornate Craftsman homes and renovated modern farmhouses

The village of Somerset is situated on just one-quarter square mile, with about 400 homes and 1,200 residents. “It’s definitely a sought-after community, partially because of the perks, but mostly it has a really good feel to it,” Davis says. The real estate market isn’t considered especially competitive because higher-priced properties stay on the market longer, and the 12-month median sale price was $1.6 million in October 2023. “The current market is low inventory coupled with low demand, as the high interest rates have kept some buyers on the sideline,” Davis says. “Sellers don’t want to sell, and buyers don’t want to buy, which is not necessarily unique to Somerset.” Properties are priced between $1 million on the low end to over $6 million on the high end. From classic architecture to new construction, home styles run the gamut in Somerset, with classic colonials, ornate Craftsman homes, renovated modern farmhouses, and even the odd Dutch colonial lining the lush, green streets. Most homes in the neighborhood have meticulously cared-for landscaping.

There is also a Bloomingdale’s nearby and a Whole Foods for stocking up on groceries and essentials. The Shops at Wisconsin Place are also in the area for a little retail therapy. There are so many places to go for a good meal near Somerset, including a few memorable high-end restaurants. Clyde’s of Chevy Chase is a long-running local chain serving classic American dishes and cocktails in a traditional setting. Stroll through the woods at Willard Avenue Neighborhood Park

Thanks to walkable access to the Red Line, sleepy Somerset is within reach of the best green spaces the District has to offer – including a quick trip downtown to the National Mall. But residents don’t need to hop on the Metro to take advantage of a quaint local park or local amenity. The neighborhood has a popular private pool accessible to residents and guests in the summer months. The Chevy Chase Club and Kenwood Country Club are both a short distance away. Williard Avenue Neighborhood Park promises five peaceful acres near the neighborhood’s southern border off River Road. Beautiful and well-kept, the park is perfect for a stroll in the woods and some reflective meditation. The park promises a playground for kids of all ages, a half-court basketball facility and a walking path with fitness equipment. Hubert Humphrey Park, Willoughby Park and Friendship Heights Park are all within walkable distance from Somerset.
